  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some people take things in the bible literally and some don't. I for one am unsure what to think in reference to any talk of the AntiChrist in the bible. Will the AntiChrist be a physical being, a period of time, an event? If the AntiChrist is supposed to be a physical being, do you think he is here now? I'm convinced at this pace and how things are declining on our little planet, the end is near. Opinions answers let me hear them all...

Husbands killing their wives. Kids shooting up schools. The soon coming oil crisis. The wars. Compare this world to the world of 1940. We are in a bad way.

Compare this world to the dark ages and the black plague. We are in a great way. The black plague killed 1/3rd of Europe. In order to get to that level today, that would be 100 million people dying in the U.S. or 2 billion people worldwide.

Oh, we're killing many more people then that. It's just happening slowly, and nobody's paying attention.

In a great way, you say? I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that statement. I'm serious. I could go either way.

The antichrist question. It's a person. I'll post more on that later, if nobody else does.

The world of 1940 was in the midst of World War II - we are much better off than that time.

Husbands killing wives is not a new phenomena. Adolescent violence is not a new phenomena. And wars are not a new phenomena. These things have been around since the dawn of civilization, and they'll probably be around in the future.

The only thing out of place in your list is the oil crisis, which I would probably blame on poor conservation and overuse, not the antichrist.

However, I would say that things have been steadily improving - the life expectancy is up, standard of living is increased, individual rights have greater precedent than the state, there is zero tolerance of crime, etc. I'd say we have it pretty good, certainly better than any other time in history.

We are in a great way. People of all political stripes like to complain about how terrible the U.S. is becoming. Conservatives complain that our morals are going down the toilet, liberals complain that our freedoms are going down the toilet, and everyone seems to think we're on the verge of collapse. These people should try living in a poverty-stricken third-world country for a while before they complain about what a horrible place this is to live in. Better yet, they should go back a few centuries and live in Europe during the Black Death.

This is a great place to live in. My only hope is that one day, everyone in the world will be able to enjoy the same comforts that we do here in the U.S. and other first-world countries. Then they'll have all the time in the world to go on the internet and complain about how horrible the world is becoming.

The Pope=Anti-Christ theory may have held water in 1530, but today the Pope and has looooong way to go before having enough power, not to mention level of corruption, to be a contender for Antichrist.

Well, the theory is still an article of the Luteran faith.

I believe the anti-christ is alive and well now and should be showing himself fairly soon.

Well, the theory is still an article of the Luteran faith.

Well, that's becasue in Luther's time that idea was plausible.

A Papal Antichrist would be simple (not easy) to achieve, as all you would need is a corrupt Pope and a strict enforcement of Unum Sanctum, but the Papacy nor Catholic Church is strong enough to do that, not to mention a Pope that corrupt would have a hard time getting elected. So if the Antichrsit is to be a Pope, the Antichrist is probably a ways off.

Really? I had no idea - was that another of Luther's ideas?

It was believed by a lot of the reformers, especially the more radical ones.

I believe in two anti-christ's.

1) An Anti-Christ is someone who doesn't believe in, or they reject Christ.

2) The Anti-Christ is a real person. I think that Satan has someone every generation ready to spring into action whenever it needs them to. Maybe they are not meant for the Apocolypse, maybe they ar just here to act as it's agents. Who knows?

I think Hitler was definatley one of agents in catagory number 2.

By all means, support this vague statement. I would also like to place the Black Death statement into perspective: 100 million people would have to die in the U.S or 2 billion people worldwide in 3 years.

The English word Antichrist is taken from the Greek Antikhr stos which literally means instead of Christ. According to the author of 1st and 2nd John an Antichrist is someone who doesn’t follow Jesus. Also according to the author of 1st John there are many antichrists that have already come thus signaling the last hour (2nd coming of Jesus) in the author’s lifetime. 1 John 2:18, 22, 4:3, and 2 John 1:7.

Paul of Tarsus has been theorized by some to have fulfilled the role of the Antichrist. I shall explain more if wanted.

Nero, the 4 emperors who succeeded him, Vespasian to emperor has been inferred from early times to be alone or jointly as the Beast of the Apocalypse.

This is only a taste of candidates for the Antichrist.

I didn't mean to imply "in 3 years time". Please see below.

Many more people than 2 billion ? Where ? Explain.

More than 20 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.
Africa has 12 million AIDS orphans.

By December 2004 women accounted for 47% of all people living with HIV worldwide, and for 57% in sub-Saharan Africa.

Young people (15-24 years old) account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide - more than 6,000 become infected with HIV every day.

Of the 6.5 million people in developing and transitional countries who need life-saving AIDS drugs, fewer than 1 million are receiving them.

During 2004 around five million adults and children became infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), the virus that causes AIDS. By the end of the year, an estimated 39.4 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS. The year also saw more than three million deaths from AIDS, despite the availability of HIV antiretroviral therapy which reduced the number of deaths in high income countries.

When it's all said and done, we'll reach that 2 billion mark, and likely go over it. Not in a years time. Not in 20 years time, clearly... as we're looking at data since 1981 and it's almost 25 years later. Still, I do believe that there are many people walking around with HIV in countries where protection is available, where clean needles are available, where clean blood supplies are available, so there should be no excuse. If I could take a blood sample from everyone who posts here on this site, a Christian forum, I guarantee you that I would find people who are HIV positive. We're ignorant as a species, concerning our own mortality, and that was the point that I was attempting to make.

You get no argument from me on that issue. My post wasn't about whether or not the USA is a great place to live. It was about death, and the rose colored glasses that seem to blind us from the impending deaths to come.

Then they'll have all the time in the world to go on the internet and complain about how horrible the world is becoming.

Unfortunately, by the time that happens, there won't be enough people here to care.

Ignorance is not bliss.

How about we just paste that entire thing, instead of just parts of it hmm?
The term antichrist (Greek: anticristoV, meaning "instead of Christ," or "against Christ") is officially Biblical, coined by the apostle John two thousand years ago, and used only five (5) times by him with limited discussion in two of his letters found in the Bible at 1st John and 2nd John. (Note however, that although the Biblical use of the term "antichrist" itself is very limited, the notion of (and pervasive spirit of) the "antichrist" is dealt with frequently and at length in the Bible. Consider, for example, the one-page letter of Jude, in which the term "antichrist" is not used but the allusion to such is very clear.)

To get a feeling for the Biblical meaning and use of the term "antichrist," the five instances of its occurrance in the Bible are presented below with relevant context:
(The translation used here, and in the remainder of this narrative, is the popular Revised Standard Version, (RSV) by virtue of its general acceptance among Bible readers.)

1st John 2:18
Children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour.

1st John 2:22
Who is the liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.

1st John 4:3
and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist, of which you heard that it was coming and now it is in the world already.

2nd John 7
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, men who will not acknowledge the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh; such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Not necessary. There is no reason to further explain a fallacy. :)

The antichrist has not yet come. All who have been "inferred and/or theorized" as antichrist's have not been the AntiChrist. If the AntiChrist had already come, then Jesus would have already returned at the 2nd coming. He would have ruled on the earth for 1000 years. Where is Jesus? Point Him out to me please.

He's not here yet. That's because the antichrist has not made himself known yet.

The antichrist will be a great military leader:

"Men worshiped the dragon [that is, Satan] because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?" "The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months [the same forty-two months in which The Two Witnesses will be active]. He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander His Name and His dwelling place and those who live in heaven. He was given power to make war against The Saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation [he will conquer countries all around the world]. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast [many will be deceived into worshiping the man] - all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to The Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. He who has an ear, let him hear." (Revelation 13:4-9 NIV)
