  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everyone-

There are several scriptures, they say that God is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. What does this mean? Can anyone explain this to me? I think a teaching on this may be about to come and if it does it will be mind-blowing! Thanks!

The first way that comes to mind is: God was there in the beginning, and will be there in the end, there was none before Him.

This is nothing new, but foundation for a lot of mind blowing thought in that area.

It is both self-explanatory, and beyond comprehension.

I see it as a declaration that God is the only absolute "brute fact". The First Cause. Self-existent Omnipotent. The creator and sustainer of very Reality —the creator and sustainer of all fact.

It also suggests that in him all things exist but that they do so from him, to him and for him. This life is about God, not the creation.

Alpha and Omega is the Word, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. He is God.

Revelation 1:8 - "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, so "the beginning and the end". This is a poetic way of speaking about God's eternal being, there is nothing before Him, for He is the cause of all things; and there is nothing after Him, because He is forever.

God is Eternal, Unchanging, He is before all things and He is after all things. All things exist because of Him, and nothing that exists exists apart from Him.

That's the meaning.

Another way that I love how this truth is expressed comes from the Confessions of St. Augustine, where in his prayer to God he says, "You who are ever-ancient and ever-new". God is the Ancient of Days, for there is none and nothing before Him, He is Most Ancient; and at the same time He is the New, He who is at the end and who knows the course of all things before and after they have happened, who renews us and is never old, He is always fresh and refreshing, living and loving, He is hope in despair, light in darkness, mercy for those who are without mercy, kindness to those who have never known kindness.

"The steadfast love of YHWH never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness!" -Lamentations 3:22-23
