  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I wanted to know how you guys felt about the ACLU?

I know some Christians have a problem with the ACLU and I wanted to know the details. Do you have a real problem with them, or is it just because the refuse to take one side over another?

Not because of the basic premise of the group, but because they want to over-kill on every situation... some things are just NOT civil rights issues... everything involving certain groups are NOT civil rights issues.

They respond to issues brought to them, they don't go around trolling for things to sue people about. I think that is a huge misconception.

Challenging the constitutionality of something is the only way to strengthen and define what the constitution actually means. Some people don't like the way certain issues are interpreted by law but that isn't the fault of the ACLU.

Gadflies like the ACLU are sometimes necessary to keep the powers that be from getting complacent. The ACLU tends to be anti-majoritarian. They usually (though not always) take the side of an individual, or of a minority, against the prevailing majority viewpoint. Which irks a lot of people.

In my experience, conservative christians, one whom you would think would want to love their neighbor as themselves, are the first ones to attack the ACLU. For one thing, like Jesus to the Pharisees, it undermines the power of the conservative church. It protects people's rights.

Often, the 700 Club will falsely tell about stories of the ACLU. For example, they have claimed that the ACLU commanded that they take down a Christmas Tree. However, the real story is that people in the town asked if they could join the celebration. Jews wanted to add the star of David to the tree. Muslims wanted to add their symbols. The city board, frustrated, just took down the tree.

Why? Who knows. I thought that Christmas was supposed to be about Peace and Good Will, and its turned into a nasty, "MERRY CHRISTMAS, thank you very much!!"

At the same time, I have seen post after post on another board about something really lame, like, "5 year old Tiffany told that she couldn't pray before snack in kindergarten!" The call in Christian lawyers, etc.

And this is news. Slow day?

I have found the only people who think the ACLU does bad are those who want to limit the rights of others
I don't think they're "bad" just sue happy over sometimes trivial issues that are just not civil liberty issues.

And I'm NOT for limiting rights. Sorry.
