  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This is a thread for monitoring and discussing the 2020 Democratic Primaries. Here we can post updates from the campaigns, polls, debates, town halls, speeches and articles by or about the candidates, and anything else of relevance between now and the convention next July.

We can be as serious or as silly as we want, but let's please remember to keep it civil. This is a thread for constructive, critical discussion. No rants about social issues you dislike, no fear mongering, and no name calling.

This thread needs to last through the primary season. As a result, those who start bickering fights, or posting off topic and are violating the site rules will likely be thread banned. It will be closely watched by staff.
So stick to the topic, and discuss it calmly.

In the most recent news, the deadline to meet the third debate qualifications has passed and it looks like we'll be having a one night debate with 10 candidates on Sept. 12 in Houston.

The Candidates:
  • Joe Biden
  • Elizabeth Warren
  • Bernie Sanders
  • Kamala Harris
  • Pete Buttigieg
  • Cory Booker
  • Amy Klobacher
  • Beto O'Rourke
  • Andrew Yang
  • Julian Castro
In addition, several candidates who did not qualify for the debate have chosen to end their campaigns: Eric Swalwell, John Hickenlooper, Jay Inslee, Seth Moulton, and Kirstin Gillibrand.

What is the best way to keep track of this thread? I have marked it as 'watch thread' but I know that I don't always get a alert on other watched thread's posts.

I'm glad it's only one night, though the next debate apparently has the same benchmarks which means that one can actually be bigger. I also had no idea who Set Moulton was, so I guess I won't miss his candidacy. It is interesting that we have three candidates make it to this debate who don't have either Gubernatorial or Congressional experience, which is very unusual.

The big question as we move into Labor Day is who will be viable candidates by the end of the year. Now, I would say that we have 11, the ten debating plus Bullock who got in late, and is a governor of a red state.

It is early enough for more to join the top 3 in being in contention in the early contests.

For those who think that this is too many, I would only say that this removes over half of the original set of candidates from consideration, a lot of winnowing after only two debates.

Moulton is a congressman from Massachusetts who's big thing was protecting and improving our national security infrastructure. I remember listening to an interview he did on Pod Save America and I did like a lot of what he said, but he wasn't really offering anything to the race that other, better established candidates weren't already.

I will admit I am kinda of bummed that they aren't splitting the debate into two nights again, if only so that each candidate gets more time to talk. I think the most anyone got to speak was 15 minutes throughout any of the previous debates.

Michael Bennet is still running as well.
Because they missed this debate doesn't mean they aren't still running.
I believe that Michael Bennet would make a better president than Beto, and I even like quirky Beto.

Now that we are getting closer to the 'last man standing' maybe we will see how far left the democratic party is willing to go. One thing is for sure: no matter how far to the left or right they go the party will leave a significant segment of their party unhappy....and that could hurt them at the polls.......

Agreed. But it is very, very early. There will be lots of debates before the February beginning of the voting. We'll have the smaller debates (5 or fewer candidates), perhaps not until next year.

EDIT
There are four votes in February (Iowa, NH, SC, NV) and
15 on March 3rd.
Those 30 days will be the key to the nomination.

That’s about 5 too many.

Probably 2024. While surprises can happen, it's going to be a Bommer this election I'm almost positive.
And apparently there are those who agree with you--better to let the economy crash again on Trump's watch.

There is little reason to think that the economy would avoid a recession under the Democrats, especially under the policies of the progressive Democrats. Obama was a miracle worker, and worked very well with Republicans (at great cost) to save the economy.

If Trump wins, it virtually certain that 2024 will be a major victory across the board for Democrats.

And apparently there are those who agree with you--better to let the economy crash again on Trump's watch.
