I looked it up in a couple of commentaries and they both said that the number was mentioned because of the size of the haul, it was miraculous that he pulled in that many after they had fished all night and came up with nothing.

Not sure if that satisfies your question or not...

I think what is significant is the fact that a number was mentioned, not what the number was. The Bible demonstrates time and again that it can be very specific about certain details. I see there are many that fulfill some need of theirs by claiming some special significance in that number, but I tell you there is not one single number you can come up with that you can't create some sort of significance for. Mathematics is funny that way. Just ask anyone who took the algorithms used by the 'Bible Code' guy and applied them to another book. It was amazing some of the 'prophesies' that were found in books other than the Bible

The importance is in the miracle, not the number. Don't miss the forest for the trees

I wasn’t going to reply (again) to this at first because it would be getting off topic but it kept calling me back.

I am very interested in things like ‘Scripture in the Stars’, Bible Numerics, Bilbe Code, The Great Pyramid and the likes. Although I don’t base my faith on these things I do believe there is something there to warrant a closer look. The Bible Code you refer to Frumanchu, was not discovered by the author of the book but was in use in ancient times by the Jewish scribes and priest. Yes they said they applied the same algorithms to the book Moby Dick but on closer examination they in fact did not. The code is based on a very rigid set of rules where the Moby Dick algorithm was not. They shoved all the words into a computer and shifted them (still sequential though) around to get the desired results. In the Bible Code the characters are not moved at all. The quote that I used in post #8 is taken from Bible Numerics, which is different again. Like the Bible Code it has a rigid set of rules.

Anyways, I didn’t reply to this post to prove Bible Numerics or the Bible Code. I just wanted to say that I believe God has put his seal on everything in existence. That seal is mathematics, which is the law of the universe. I believe that is the significance of the number of fishes they caught. God put his seal on it.

I just bought a video (The Fire from Heaven by Ray Comfort at Livingwaters.com) awhile ago that talked about this a bit. It's just idea that he mentioned, so go ahead and chuck it if you don't agree.

Also, have ever noticed how Peter had a lot of things happen in 3's?

2 Kings:9-14 It mentions 3 groups of 51 ( 50 men plus the captain). The first two groups are consumed by fire, the third is saved. This could be like the other parables (the wise and foolish virgins). He said that could be like the church, many are false converts few are not. Just an idea.
