I have posted this before in another thread, but this is interesting. Back in the late 50's, radio stations refused to play the original doowop version of songs, and only because the groups were black. But the music was good, so there were all white groups that "covered" the original song, and that was the one that got the airplay. And by the way--the the late 50's, doowop was 1/3rd of all rock and roll!
Here is an example. Earth Angel. First, the absolutely horrible cover version by the Crew Cuts:

And now the one the the kids bought, and for good reason--much, much, much better! This one is a classic! Here are the Penguins with the origninal:
