I love this part of the entire forum, edification. It is beautiful to me to help a brother out in his walk when he is low or just needs an encouraging ear. :) Unity is amazing.

I need help.

To sum the basics of my problem up, I have a short temper. Believe it or not not many people outside of my home see this side of me. Only my girl friend...

Here's a list that I'm ashamed of that follows my temper:

Jealousy, hate, cursing, words that are NOT uplifting, arrogance, ignorance, bullheadedness, and... I think that sums up that for the most part.

I want to seek God out on this on how to control my temper. Can any direct my approach on this Biblically? Thanks.

Be Blessed.

Dear LogosRhema,

It is a huge step that you have confessed this. Too often our embarrassment and denial keep us pent up and not available to God's love and forgiveness.

What first comes to mind is when Peter was given the vision of being able to eat all things, even those not kosher. When he questioned the Lord, he was told that it wasn't what went in a person that made him unclean but what came out of the person. Thus, cursing and all manner of vile language is indicative of the state of the heart. I say this with all love -- and as one who has been there with the same problem.

Talk to a pastor or trusted Christian friend, again confessing this and repenting. God will give you the strength to overcome this. From my experience, I think such talk can become habit and as such, can be overcome by the habit of praise and uplifting talk.

God's blessings to you. And kiss your dear girlfriend ... tell her of your repentance and your dedication to speaking what is helpful and keeping a peaceful disposition. God will help you. If you fail at first, keep at it. Our God is faithful and merciful. Peace to you.

Thank you. Very sound advice. I'll remember this :).

I do not curse much when I'm not angry, but when my temper flare so does the tongue.

Have you any Biblical insight?

One passage comes to mind, I don't remember where it is so I'll just paraphrase it "The anger of man does not work the righteousness of God." You already knows this, though, I think!

Feeling anger is not a sin. If you cut yourself, you hurt, if someone lies to you, you hurt. It's what we do with the anger that matters. Anger doesn't justify anything, but it's important to realize it's a normal response. Something which always calms me down is the Bible passage "treat others as you want to be treated" (paraphrase again). I think it's wise that you are asking for Biblical insight. When you feel the anger starting to flow over you, think of Bible passages and God. That's what I do, but boy is it tempting to just go along with the anger.

LR, I would recommend deliverance for you. LR I was like you and I had received deliverance many many many years ago and the demonic attitude I had left me in Jesus Name.
Mark 9:29
And He [Jesus] said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Thanks,
TT

Texas,

I do not necessarily believe this is a demonic thing, yea I believe they feed off it and tempt me, but my free will choose to be this way. I don't believe that everything bad from my car not starting to my neighbor yelling at me to get off his porch always has demonic connections. I believe the result of this temperament was how I was raised, free will, and I allowed my flesh to rule this time. Now it's a matter of breaking an old habit and old habits die hard. Now deliverance from the flesh, thanks to you, is what I believe I need.

Hmm be an interesting book to right, was it my flesh or DEMONS?! [dun dun dun]

Thanks texas!

OTA,

I know where you are coming with those verses :), thanks for the reminders! I'm going to keep them in mind as I go through this change. I had forgotten the idea of memorizing encouraging verses that I could quote in my head to calm me down, that and prayer. It's amazing how small things are easily forgotten.

Thank you!

Bible verses about dealing with anger and about anger itself, still coming up short here. :) Anyone know at least the best place to go in the Bible about this?
Brother, work your way through the book of Proverbs! That should cover just about every base you will need.

As for further advice, my best advice (from someone that suffered with this when I first got married) is accountability! Get a RL person outside of your family, to hold you accountable and to ask you regularly whether you are holding to your promise to remain calm.

Also tell everyone you are in relationship with that has been on the receiving end of your anger that you are trying to deal with this and that they have your permission to call you up on this issue should it raise up again.

Believe me you will soon learn how to control your anger and use it biblically as Christ did!

Pete

Hello :)

Just a quick peice of un-detailed advise. Whenever I feel my anger coming or a situation where I feel angry; I chant quietly to myself the words of Saint Francsis of Assisi "Lord make me an instrument f thy peace" and usually I focus on the positive things of life. I know it sounds corney. I follow many teachings of the Stoics and they teach us to control our passions and not to let our emotions effect us. I find this helps :).
Think of birds, of God, of babies, of music and the famous saying "What would Jesus do?" as cheesy as I find it, its still good

Here is my latest favorite search engine for the Bible it includes all translations and commentary; it also has audio so if you need to ‘listen’ to a chapter it will read it to you. It is very easy to use, which is a major plus at my computer challenged age.

My temper has been a problem for me and my brothers due to the way we grew up. My younger brother recently said that if people knew me the way he knew me they would really try to avoid making me angry. My response to him was that it was very important that God lead us to Christ because if we weren’t Christians we would be terribly scary people. LOL

Peace and a Blessing
