  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is somebody/anbody going to take a stand against what's on television these days. I know we have all kinds of "groups" out there fighting hard but it seems like tv gets more out of control every year.

I'm glad the FCC is not backing down from CBS for that SuperBowl (hear they're still appealing).....

I'm not advocating censorship or anything but heck......

I know that I can turn the television off....but why should I have to?

Anyway, just venting...does anybody else feel this way?

What problems, exactly, do you see with TV? I mean, the Janet Jackson thing was years ago. CBS should not be held liable for her behaviour (if it was even intentional) on live TV if they didn't know it was going to happen.

More generally, though, where would you personally draw the line? What sort of programming do you see fit to restrict from airing? Furthermore, where does your responsibility to avoid programs you find offensive end, and responsibility on the part of the broadcaster to limit content begin?

I'm a member of www.onemillionmoms.com. The whole point is to get large groups of consumers to complain to the advertisers of shows that are horribly raunchy (recently, some on the FX station). Eventually, when the advertisers all pull out, there won't be funding for these types of shows and things will calm down, a bit. We don't want to curb anyone's "freedom of speech", but the channels are supposed to be serving us . . . right? So, we'll pull our support from those that display horrid programming.

I agree that the channels are there for us, but 'us' isn't the same as 'me'. I would never expect EVERY CHANNEL to cater to my personal standards. If I don't like something I don't watch.....I don't make a mission out of killing off sponsorships or trying to impose my will on the general population via boycotts. That kind of thing always strikes me as very self-obsessed.

Hmm.. what's the point? Some of us like to watch said "raunchy" shows. If you don't like it, it's not like you have to get up to change the channel anymore... just use your remote ;)

Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch a show that included more than 80 obscenity/profanity statements in the hour (45 minutes, really) it's on (that's in addition to the graphic rape scene). That absolutely baffles me. Because I find these offensive, I make sure the advertisers know what they're supporting (it seems several did not) and don't support those who continue to support such filth. They make the choice where they spend their $$ and I make the choice where I spend mine. It's only fair, right?

well, what you might think of as "filth" I may find mildly entertaining. It's totally fair, and you have a right to spend your money where you want, and voice your opinion, and watch what you want on tv. But I have the same rights... so... where does that leave us?

Honestly, what I personally can't imagine is anybody going through and counting instances of "obscenity/profanity" in a television show. That absolutely baffles me.

But it takes all kinds to make a world, doesn't it? ;)

I think that leaves us both able to express our opinions and change the channel:D. Does that sound about right?

Great idea lets block all forms of art, expression, and entertainment that may offend someone. I hope you enjoy watching the color adjust bars, and static snow on T.V. and looking at endless paintings of landscapes in the museum.
You certainly have the right to do that for yourself (and minor children in your home). I said, "let everyone voice his/her opinion and change the channel". I think that's fair.

Regarding the OP, what truly saddens me about television today is the state of children's programming. When I was a child, we had clever, amusing, and intellectually-challenging television shows, with real plot and character development. The animated programs were generally well-drawn. Now... children's programming today is a wasteland of drek. With precious few exceptions, it's a condescending miasma of bright colors and simplistic drawings with no real intellectual or artistic value. Something should be done.

I agree 100% with this. I looked briefly at the children's shows on today. PATHETIC! What ever happened to Mr. Wizard's World and the like? 3-2-1 Contact? ...makes me wish I was a kid again :(

I was having a discussion with somebody else about the state of children's programming the other day, and I wholeheartedly agree.. it's pretty sad.

Rather than trying to bar channels from showing "raunchy" programming geared towards an older audience (which children could potentially end up viewing), I think the time and effort would be far better spent invested in helping formulate quality, age-appropriate programming for kids.
