  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Although he's not a TV evangelist per se, there is one man that I STILL watch if I know he's on. You see, he just sits in a comfy chair and reads the Bible out loud. He has a wonderful voice. If you ever watch, you can see he has done this year after year because his hair turns over time from dark brown to silver.

Oh yeah..his name..Efrem Zimbalist Jr...of Dragnet fame.

As for the rest, bah. Although some of them tick me off more than others and I do have a soft spot for Billy Graham.

While I subscribe to the idea that pretty much all of them are, I had to mention Oral Roberts (since I didn't see where anyone else has mentioned him). It's tough to forget him saying that he had to raise $8 million or God was going to call him home, then miraculously at the end of the period God decided the $3.5 million was enough.

TV evangelists seem to suck all the spirit out of Jesus' message. Instead they promote intolerance, a love of money and commercialism, preaching as entertainment. I have seen the gamut from the traditionalist healing scams, to the more secular-appearing generation x new-age type of marketing. And that's what it is, marketing.

I recall college acquaintances who would smoke pot and watch Mother Angelica, Jimmy Swaggart, or Ernest Angsley, for sport.

The scary thing is that people do watch these shows, give the ministries tons of money and believe the outrageous statements that pass the lips of these talking heads.

The only one that I respect enough to listen to is Billy Graham. I feel that his educational background (the several PhD's he has in things like history, theology, religion etc) are what set him apart.

Jerry Falwell or however you spell it, lost any credibility when he told Americans that the reason the WTC was attacked was because of the pagans and heathens in the country and it was their fault and their fault alone.

Talk about kicking the dog while it's down.

My only solace is, that if the Bible is correct, then they (the preachers etc) will be judged the most harshly when their time comes.

Any one that is trying to sell mugs, hats, t-shirts, salvation, vials of water or anything else.

which ones do you find most credible?
Reverend Lovejoy.

Okay, okay, there is one the Vision network that just has discussions and preaches about the Bible, but I think it's more of a televised service than an actual televangilist

There are also sometimes Anglican or Catholic Masses on TV that are done not to make money but to share the Word. I like those. And that nun who reviewed paintings was really really cool. (I haven't see her on lately...I hope she is okay)

i don't think this one is really an evangelist per se either but a televised sermon. his name is dr. fred price. there are some things i don't agree with him on obviously and i've turned him off a couple times when he started preaching about money and how some people's checks had bounced when they donated but overall he seems to be pretty balanced.

He is the pastor of Crenshaw Christian Center in LA. Sometimes, when I am up on Sunday morning and he is on (7am), I might watch him - I kinda like his style of preaching. Watching him (maybe once/twice a month or every other month) on early Sunday morning is the only church I "attend".

#1 All-time tele-evangelist scumbag has to be Pat Robertson. It seems now that every 2-3 months, almost as clockwork, he says something that is utterly inappropriate or usually just plain stupid. But what is just simply pure entertainment is that he just never seems to learn. I feel sad for the many sincere Christians out there because he is such a huge embarassement and of course does not speak for many of them. The guy really needs to be put out to pasture, but amazingly there are people that still send him money.

there are so many to choose from, but i think my number one stomach turner has to be robert tilton. he is the one that for a certain contribution he will pray over your mailed in request and send you a "prayer cloth", a few inch square piece of non-descript cloth. upon investigation, peoples prayer requests were found discarded. he had an office staff that would do a "check-ectomy", removing the money and discarding the prayer requests.
he was also filmed while on route from one destination to another in an airplane laughing about how he was suckering millions out of people. he lost his ministry after the investigation, only to give it about 6 years or so and open shop again, with the exact same scam he had done before. he had accurately evaluated the gullibility of the public, and the money began to flow in again as if nothing had happened. he can be found on tv once again, and his "ministry" is growing.
though i find him the most egregious, i find falwell to be the most insidious. he comes across as a legitimate pastor. he has his pulpit in lynchburg and he preaches under the auspices of a major denomination, the baptists, much to their discredit. he is president of a major Christian university that even has taken on a high profile in collegiate athletics. he has smoozed with presidents and made the Christian right a political force to contend with.
but here's the rest on falwell. his second and third in command in the moral majority both resigned under him. one of them is a famous right wing columnist and tv personality, cal thomas. they co-wrote a book called "blinded by might" and if you haven't read it, my conservative friends, it is very compelling. both men are still conservative evangelical Christians, and both came to the conclusion that the use of the faith as a political tool was a gross disservice to God. this book is a must read, as it is one of the few i have read that deals with politics and blends the line between right and left.
falwell also appeared on an episode of "politically correct" and it was one of the most jaw dropping performances i have ever seen. also on that night was rick james of "super freak" fame, and he had just become born again (he said). he was talking about how wild some of the stories in the bible are, and he mentioned the story of the man who went up into the hills with his two daughters, and on subsequent nights they got him drunk and had sex with him, to continue the species. many of you will recognize the fate of lot after the fall of sodom and gomorrah. mr. james could not remember who the man was, and turned to falwell and said, "you know who i mean reverend. who was that?" falwell thought for a minute and then replied, "i think that was....job." not only did he not know the rest of the story of sodom and gomorrha and lot, he was not very familiar with job, one of the more pivotal books of the old testament. this is the leadership that has the reigns of the most powerful political force in Christendom.
