Hello! Once again I have come with a question, although it is not my question in particular. :)

A friend of mine, a devout christian, has recently brought forth another portion of his theology: "Technology will destroy us"

My friend carefully explained to me that technology and learning has caused us to become dependant on science, and that when our technology fails on us, we will be left to suffer.

Now, I can see his point that our overuse of science could do this, but it goes on...

He also believes "following our desire to innovate, invent, and discover" (what I said in return) is giving into a desire that satan wants us to follow.

Third, he also feels that science has done nothing beneficial for us except in the field of health.

Fourth, science can not answer all of the questions, the bible has all of the answers that we need to know.

Fifth: I ,a Christian, am being fed lies by satan.

Now, this may seem strange, but I find something wrong with the ideology as a whole  . I have tried reasoning with him but he seems to be very close-minded on the whole topic. Is there anything I could possibly tell him on the basis that I am against this point of view overall?

We cannot help but be like the One we are an image of. How can a child not be curious and want to know more of their Creator? Science and scientists are not atheistic. Science proves God for those that seek Him and only proves His presence and glory. We choose how we use it as a tool of ivestigation in our environment. Sounds a little like throwing out the baby with the bath water to me...?!

He has some good points, but that seems to be a little silly to be close-minded on such an opinionated subject.

I guess here's the view of technology though:

* Without it, copies of the Bible would be rare.
* The internet can provide one with abundante Biblical resources

Of course... the downfall is

* Copies of the Occult, Buddist, and other wicked religious books and documents have been spread.
* Nine tenth of the Internet is used for porn, and other unspeakable sin.

Taking sides is very hard. He shouldn't be so narrowed minded though: science and mathmatics have definitly improved basic life, though he has many good points in how mankind seeks to "invent evil things" (Romans 1:30).

Well, I don't suppose you're going to get a even-sided pool of opinions concerning whether or not *technology* is evil on an INTERNET FORUM ^_^ but here are my two cents:
Jesus used technology. He used nets, VERY sophistocated maritime crafts, sophistocated welling crafts, saws, hammers, nails--the Apostles used technology to write down their letters and comunicate. Don't forget that paper and pen are the grandparents of the computer. If computers are evil, so are paper, signal fires, and messenger routes.
Without technology, man is nothing. Technology is man's claw. His brain is his strength. Without reasoning, man is not what God intended him to be. (Not that he ever is, in his fallen state.) Technology enhances man's ability to do evil along with good--this is true. But does that mean that the arrow is evil, because it makes man more powerful, and able to destroy his brother? Are hammers evil, because they can be used for destruction as well as construction? I know you've probably done this already, but I think the point you need to make to your friend lies around his hypocrisy. Without technology, your friend would not exist--his fathers would have died long before him, and if he actually forsook technology as he claims he has, he would perish in a short time himself. Until Christ returns, evil will always use the tools of men to destroy men--whether this be the computer or the pen, the gun or the sword.

I'm a Christian and I have a Ph.D in biochemistry. I find that science actually strengthens my belief in God. I believe that God loves me so much that he knows each of my cells (very small) and yet I am only one person in his entire creation (infinitely large). Also, science cannot explain miracles, yet miracles exist today and the Gospels.

God is the Why and science is the How, in my opinion.

God bless

Although for different reasons, tell him you know, there was one guy who felt the same way as you in regards to technology. I think he wrote a manifesto about it. I think his name was Ted Kaczynski, but everyone refers to him a "The Unabomber."

I can see where he's coming from. I've often wondered what the world would be like spiritualy if we had stayed more simplistic. I think both good and bad have come from technology, it's just been magnafied on both ends. I don't know. I often yearn to spend some time camping in true wilderness. Just to get away from all this technology and white noise.

I know what you mean. I try not to watch that much tv just because of that.
Now this is the technology that has taken a turn toward the dark side.
However if you take into account the many mouths fed by modern farm technology then you see a great good. If a law was passed tomorrow that all farms must scrap the tractor and go back to mules to plow the soil for planting, the world would be under mass starvation within days.
