  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Technicalities

Are spelling and grammar important to you when you're writing?

  • no. not realy (yeah, i did that on purpose.)

  • Not the first time around...I'll fix it when I edit.

  • Sometimes. I try to get it right, but I'm not going to pull a muscle over it.

  • Yes. Technical mistakes drive me crazy.

When you're writing, how important are technicalities like spelling and grammar to you? I'm sort of compulsive...I need proper grammar. And misspellings drive me insane. Sometimes it's sort of a pain during the writing process, but it makes the editing process go a heck of a lot faster.

Anyone else?

Your poll doesn't really fit me.

On the one hand, I always make an effort to use standard punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

On the other hand, I realize that there is no such thing as "proper" punctuation, spelling, or grammar.

The bottom line is the bottom line -- I can make money if I write in a standardized form.

true enough...
the spelling and grammar can at times vary depending on what you're writing. i guess i'm talking like mistake-wise, though.

In actuality, the only mistake you can possibly make when using language is lack of clarity. So cheer up, everyone! As long as your meaning has been clear, you have correctly spelled and punctuated every word you've ever written.

From a practical point of view, however, editors and publishers tend to require adherence to a standardized list of rules.

Ah, but that discussion is probably better suited to the Linguistics and Etymology forum....

When writing anything, I edit as I go. If I know what I'm typing and I misspell something then I will fix it then. But if I'm writing something fast, like when I am inspired or something and have to get it out before I forget (or if I'm just making it up as I go, but it's comming to mind fast), then I will not care as much about spelling and grammer issues. But as soon as I'm done writing, if I wrote it on the computer, then I spell check it. Then reread it tons of times to edit it...
I didn't vote on any of the choices because I didn't think any really fit me.

I don't usually worry about writing mistakes; my software typically fixes it, or I correct it as I go along. One could say my writing is nothing but writing mistakes, because I often choose narratives that are filled with Reagonomics or heavy on dialects and mispronunciations. All in all, I usually write like I talk, and that's a mistake in itself. ;p
