  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's the end of the quarter and time for SEOI's here at Central. (Student Evaluation Of Instruction).

Just curious, when have you ever had to give out bad reviews?

This quarter I was "blessed" with the opportunity of having to fill out a bad review for all three of my professors.

I don't try to be mean in them, just honest. There are certain (albeit few) good traits each have, but overall the classes were a waste of money. And in my 16 years of student...ness, I can finally replace my 3rd grade teachers position as "worst teacher in the universe" with my sociology prof.

Anyway, I'm "preparing" for tomorrows SEOI's and thinking of everything I want to write down....

I don't really think or prepare on what to write when it comes to the evalutions. I just did three out of the four professors this week and i gave them good reviews.

I have had to give out bad evaluations to a few of my professor in the past. The last time i did that was about a year ago because this guy was completely self-centered and gave the students a hard time because he could.

I know that these evaluations effect whether or not they keep them as associate professors so I do not want to mess with their job. If I understood the material and they are fair at grading i will give them exceptional marks in most areas and call it a day.

Most of my profs were quite good, so most of my reviews reflected that. I did have some pretty useless classes, but it wasn't the prof's fault. I have put a few negative comments on prof evaluations, but I've never had to fill out an evaluation that was completely negative.

We've been doing evaluations lately and sadly, I had to give one of my professors a bad evaluation. I was completely honest and said that he really never stayed on topic and we never covered much material then would have tests. Some of my classmates and I agreed that we would love to save future students the pain of this professor in that class if we can. Sorry if that sounds harsh...I don't mean it to.

I gave a bad review for an adjunct professor in CJ that I had. It was an online course - I'm in LA and he's in Alaska - so there was no face to face interaction. Perhaps if I could've gotten to know him in a traditional classroom setting, I would've have been so disappointed. With our time differences, phone calls were impossible so all correspondence had to be through email - he failed to respond for at least the first month of classes - until I called the dean (I doubt I was the only one to complain). Then suddenly he had unexplained problems with his email. He then started replying, but would answer only portions of the email. Questions about exams were met with silence. He refused student requests for a discussion board to chit chat or ask questions. To sum it up, as a Sr (finally!), I've taken A LOT of courses, but never have I been so disappointed in an instructor. Whew! I was long winded.

I can only think of 2 professors to whom I gave bad evaluations.

One hadn't earned tenure yet, and was dismissed. I felt bad about that, especially since I got an "A" in his class - but that was due to my knowledge rather than his teaching. He goofed off a lot, and always got off-target. :sigh:

The other one was a HORRIBLE teacher - he couldn't teach flies to buzz! Since he was a full professor (and a jogging buddy of the dean), my evaluation made no difference. I see on the website that he's still there (20 years later), and still getting bad reviews from the students! :(

Most of the classes I am taking are just a waste of money. They are very stupid... and the profs don't know what they are talking about! Therefore, I have no idea why I'm a senior at my university if the classes are horrible and a waste of 15,000 of the 20,000 for tuition.

I had to give my English prof a bad review yesterday....well, not horrible...He just wasn't terribly engaging and 1/2 the class was always ready to fall asleep during his class. It's a required class though and it wouldn't matter which prof I had, it would be the same material...but from what I hear some others were much better at keeping their students awake.
The rest of my profs have been awesome (I'm tempted to say something in my Anthro prof's review about how boring the subject is though....he makes it fun, but I want to poke my eyes out while reading the textbook).

I've only given one professor bad marks since I've been in college. I have a 4.0, so I know I can learn, but I learned nothing in his class and not for the lack of tyring. He was obnoxious and cursed at us (european curse words like bloody and stuff) and called us dumb.

I think it's really important to be honest in those evaluations. You should let them know what kind of job they're doing. I've given a few lecturers/tutors bad evaluations but most of them have been really good.

I heard about this lecturer in the History department of my uni who types up all the reviews he gets from students (positive ones of course) and puts them in his course outlines. I dunno about you but that sounds a bit arrogant to me!
