So I bought this tea called "Pregnancy Tea" it has Raspberry Leaf, Strawberry Leaf, Nettle herb, and a blend of various other herbs.

Does anyone know what the strawberry leaf does? It smells really good in the box, but I haven't tried it yet.

Someone asked me a few weeks ago about the red raspberry leaf tea thing, and here is a story I found inspiring ;)

The Raspberry Leaf Tea Story

Tea made from raspberry leaves is the best-known herbal aid in pregnancy. Rather than go into all the traditional lore about this herb, we present the following lengthy account, because it is both contemporaneous and highly specific.

"My mother was born and raised in Scotland, coming to america at the age of 26. Whenever a member of her family became ill or had a health problem, her mother had consulted an herbalist or herb doctor. As a result of this, I was treated with herbs as a child.

"Mother had always told me that red raspberry leaf tea would prevent miscarriage and was excellent for pregnany and chilbirth. When I became pregnant, I immediately sent for some raspberry leaf tea and began taking one cup of it each day, made from one teaspoon of dried leaves added to one cup of boiling water and steeped for 15 minutes. I had a very normal pregnancy. Then I went into labor, I truly expected to have an easy labor and delivery because I had faithfully taken the tea. While it is true that I did not have a complicated or extremely difficult time, it was not by any means easy. The tea had not lived up to my expectations.

"It was not until sometimes after the birth of my daughter that I read a book my mother had brought with her from Scotland entitled Dragged to Light by W.H. Box of Plymouth, England. In it I found the secret of just how to take the tea so it would truly work wonders during labor and delivery. Box said, 'On one ounce of raspberry leaves pour one pint of boiling water, cover and let steep for 30 minutes. Strain, and when the time for delivery is approaching drink the whole as hot as possible.'

"There were a number of testimonials in the book written by women who had used this herb. Several took the strong solution over a period of time before going into labor. They were instructed in that case to take a wineglassful three times a day. They had 'only two stiff pains and it was all over' or 'no after pains and very slight before.' They never made it out of the house. Box's instructions were, 'But those who take the tea considerably before the time should not leave the house when the time is approaching as many mothers are delivered almost suddenly when at their work, to the great veaxtion of doctors and nurses.'

"When I became pregnant again I was determined to try it that way. I still took a cup a day as I had before. but this time when I went into labor I made a strong solution of it as I had read in the book. I put it in a container and took it to the hospital with me. I wasn't sure how quickly it would work and I didn't want to have the baby in the car. I didn't think they'd allow me to drink it in the hospital so I drank half of it in the parking lot. I was afraid to drink all of it as it was so strong and I didn't personally know anyone who had taken it this strong before. I had been having strong contractions but by the time I registered and was taken up to the labor room the contractions were so mild I hardly felt them. Upon examination they said I was ready to deliver and would not even give me an enema. In the delivery room I was quite comfortable and hardly felt anything. One hour after entering the hospital my son was born.

"In the recovery room there were several other young women who had just given birth also. They were moaning abd groaning. I couldn't imagine what they were making a fuss about as I felt like I could have gotten up and gone home. I had always read and heard about women getting after-pains with a second child. I never had even one. This was also the testimony of a number of women who were treated with the tea by Box.

"Later I thought I would have had an easy time anyway since it was my second child. I was anxious for someon else to try it. A friend of mine was expection a baby in a few weeks and she had been taking a cup of the tea daily and was also goig to take the strong solution when she went into labor. She had had two previous pregnancies and both times nearly miscarried and had to take drugs and be in bed a good deal of the time. Both deliveries were extremely difficult. When she became pregnant this time she began spotting and it looked like she would have to go through the same kind of trouble she had before. Having used an herb I had given her for another problem, with success, she asked if there was an herb for this problem and I recommended raspberry leaf tea.

"She started taking it and the spotting stopped immediately and she had a normal pregnancy, much to the amazement of her family who remembered her difficulties in the past. When she went into labor she took the tea as I had and told me she had only 25 minutes of hard labor before her baby was born.

"I have told a number of women about this amazing herb through the years, but no one else seemed interested enough to try it. However, 1978 my daughter became pregnant and she was very much interested in having an easy delivery. She took the tea each day and had a normal pregnancy. She, too, took the strong solution of the tea with her to the hospital and also being a little wary drank only half of it. When the doctor examined her, it was late in the evening. He said the baby wouldn't be born until six o'clock in the the morning so he went hime. She was having hard contractions at this time and I was very disappointed and felt the tea hadn't worked. An hour and a half later we recieved a call from our son-in-law saying we had a little grandson. The tea started working and the doctor had no sooner reached his home when he had to turn around and come right back to the hospital. My daughter said the next time she is going to drink all of the tea."

Its just a story, but I think I'll give it a try... drinking RRL regularly, but also the strong potion right before entering the hospital (I bolded the strong potion recipe). Anyone want to try this with me? It would be a good experiment. :D

Huh. I had been recommended red raspberry leaf when I became "overdue," but had been given the impression it's best not to drink earlier. But I can't find anything to back that claim up, so maybe I'll start drinking sometime soon. The pregnancy tea sounds neat, you'll have to tell me how it tastes. :p

I wanted to try it but my OB advised against it.

I don't know what strawberry tea does but I took strawberry extract once when I I was feeling "icky" for weeks on end and didn't know why. Doctor recommended strawberry extract 2 teaspoons a day and in 4-5 days I was going # 2 more often(I think that was my trouble) & I felt better.

OB's rarely understand herbs so it's common for them to "advise against" them.

RRL helps tone & strengthen the uterus, so it makes the uterus work more efficiently. Thus the story Leanna posted is True. Every woman who's faithfully taken RRL capsules (or drank the tea~ or the pregnancy tea) at my suggestion, has reported back to me that Yes, indeed, it Did help immensely (compared to a previous pregnancy/labor/birth). It also Reduces afterbirth blood flow.

Strawberry Leaf:
Strawberry Leaf tea has similar properties to the herbs red raspberry and squawvine. Therefore most herbalists indicate it as safe and gentle for all stages of pregnancy and post partum. It is recommended to use the tea if you are experiencing a lot of internal and external heat during pregnancy. It is good for reducing fevers. Strawberry leaf tea is also known to support the attachment of the placenta to the uterine walls and the herbs may help check diarrhea.

My doc is from India, he's actually very open to natural things etc Letting things be, not telling me to take a pill for every little thing but because of all my medical problems, he doesn't know how I'd react hense why he'd rather I didn't rock the boat. He's been with me on all my other natural choices and actually recommended a few.

Oh that's cool Linnis! I wish more Western healthcare providers were open to herbs and nutrition to solve problems. :)

I don't think all "western" doctors are bad. Yes, there are a few who love to write scripts. As for pushy ones, you can find that with anyone who strongly believes in what they believe. I've had pretty good run with doctors, most don't want to fill be with drugs and try the other options first, then again if a doctor rubs me the wrong way I don't go back.

Okay, I'll stop stealing Leanna's thread now. :sorry:

I agree with jgonz, although I had the idea that RRL was bad for pregnancy unless you were late.... after I found this story I did some research and couldn't find anything about it, and since I bought a tea that says right on the box "pregnancy" and it has RRL in it, I figure I'm good to try it. :D

So katlyn, you in? And Linnis only if you discuss with ob again of course ;)

I wouldn't say western doctors are "bad" but western doctors tend to practice western medicine. They are taught from the start to use drugs, drugs, drugs and do tend to be resistant to more natural methods in almost all things, including the acidophilus (my western medicine folk that I went to for my yeast infection didn't mention it!).

Most of the sites I looked at say it works, some say it isn't proven to do anything. I am going to start after 14 weeks with some, and after I hit 36 or 37 weeks drink a lot, and I'm going to do the super strong brew when I am in labor (why not?)

All I know is that I was drinking RRL tea during my first pregnancy, and shortly after I began taking it I started having contractions daily -- way too early. I read on the box that it was supposed to be taken closer to the due date, so I stopped and the contractions stopped.

I've never had any other problems with preterm labor, only those strong contractions when I took RRL tea.

I read what mothers at www.mothering.com said and they said that when they drink it they feel a tightening of the uterus, but its not harmful. RRL is a uterine toner, so it makes sense.

This was bad enough that I had to go to the hospital. Twice. I was only drinking 1 cup a day.

It probably also depends on how often you are drinking it and how potent it is. I think the RRL box I had said 3x a day, I never drank it that much (except maybe when I was overdue). How often does the pregnancy tea say to drink it?

The box says 3 times a day, but I think they're just trying to make more money. ;) I'll just do once a day, until near the end and then I'll increase.

You should only drink about 1 cup a day of RRL tea. If it's the Pregnancy tea, the RRL is more diluted with other herbs, so you could drink 2 cups per day and be fine.

3 cups per day would be for someone like me, who's had Several children, or someone who has a weak uterus muscle, or has had problems in the reproductive area. I actually still take 6 capsules of RRL per day....

RRL tones & strengthens the uterus, so it's Very similar to Braxton Hicks contractions. Actually, RRL may stimulate BH contractions (which is what a lot of moms notice). But BH contractions are Good for the uterus~ they tone & strengthen the uterus, readying it for labor.

The diference with BH contractions and real labor contractions is that BH do Not change the condition of the cervix, while real labor contractions do.
