  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Personally, I do not have a problem with tattoos, despite not desiring to have any myself.

I do find women with a lot of tattoos to be hot. There is a sentiment that floats around in the manosphere that women with tattoos are gross and degenerates, but personally I don't really understand the aversion to them.

The only thing I can really think of is them not looking good with old saggy skin.. but at that point in your life.. it's like.. "who cares".. it's pretty much game over anyways, lol.

If anyone must have a tatt, it should be in an inconspicuous location. I wonder if anyone tattooed on their face, neck, hands. or other obvious location can find employment in a lucrative profession, i.e., law, medicine, dentistry, engineering, or the upper echelons of business or education,
You can have all the tattoos you want wherever you want them and be in any of the very lucrative skilled trades.

I have a tat of Jesus on one arm and a Celtic cross on the other (among other tats).

I also have a Jesus tat. Although, I was at the beach and a younger fella thought it was the Zig Zag man. Kids these days. Mine has some color. I wish I had gone straight black ink.

Someone might be a great plumber. But I wouldn't hire anyone with a swastika tattoo on his/her forehead.

Hola!
Surely previously discussed in CF but starting a new thread as I am always fascinated with other people’s point of view, advice, opinions....

Get one, don’t get one, why yes

That's entirely up to the individual.

Why not, does the Bible specifically talk about it.

Go! (please and thank you :congrat:)

L4H

In one of the Levitical codes marking the flesh for the purpose of engaging in pagan practice and worship is condemned. Discussing theology and biblical interpretation isn't permitted here. So that's all I'll say about that.

What I will say, however, is that the oldest still in operation tattoo parlor in the world is a Christian tattoo parlor in Jerusalem that has been giving tattoos to Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land for the last 700 years.

I will say, from my perspective...just as how we dress and how we behave, what we say and how we treat others. It all depends on the intent.

For example, my reason for a small tattoo on my shoulder or wrist would be a reminder of the fear and love I have for the Lord. A little cross. A short meaningful Bible verse.
Something along those lines. :)
A secular example of that would be the cast of the Lord of the Rings, some of whom, at the end of filming got a small commerative tatoo. That seems a modest and reasonable thing to do. Beyond that I find my reaction to tatoos moving from disinterest to distaste as the body area occupied by them increases. That's purely personal and if an adult wants to decorate their body it's their business, but it not for me. And given there permanence I hope all who are considering them think long and hard, and take heed of @jayem's comments.

Tatoos are permanent markings like livestock get. Tatoos despoil God's creation. Best not to have any for any reason.
Tattooing is an art form. Like all art, some are garbage and some are masterpieces. Participation is optional.

One might point out that talking about livestock isn't exactly the diss against tattoos that one might think; as livestock language is rather plentiful in the Bible, written by people from a pastoralist society; and where the people of God are frequently described as sheep and their Lord as the Shepherd. From Psalm 23's "YHWH is my Shepherd, I lack nothing" all the way to Jesus saying " I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." in John 10. Or, for example, where Jesus turns to Peter and says, "feed My lambs ... tend My sheep".

One might also take note of the language of markings described positively in the Bible, such as in Deuteronomy 6 where the Torah is to be the mark of the people between their eyes and on their right hand. Or Paul in Ephesians 1 saying the Church is sealed with the Holy Spirit. Or John in the Apocalypse seeing a vision of God's people marked on their forehead with God's seal.

From these things one can actually make a rather potent argument that some tattoos--religious tattoos--literally mark the flesh as the property of Christ. That is certainly how the Faithful in Egypt have understood it for hundreds of years.

Livestock are property and the markings they receive are to mark them as their owner's property. I see tatoos on man or woman as a despoilation of God's creation.
