  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, I know there are pretty ones, there are beautiful one.! There are ones that could be considered a work of art. It does depend on the person, I totally agree. It's just a lot of designs are either ugly or pretentious.
Yes. As much as I dislike them personally my daughter has a beautiful one. She choose a work of art she has always admired and had it reproduced on her body to cover up a stupid one she got in high school. And it's in a semi-private location so it doesn't show unless she wants it to.

I guess I would have to see the tattoo. I saw a guy with eyes on the back of his head and horns. I was gross looking.. but I can't say it's "immoral". I don't like tattoos, but I don't condemn anyone who has one. My only comment is: visit a nursing home first and see what they are going to look like 25 plus years down the road (you usually can't tell what the original tattoo was). yuck..

That was a good post. The idea that tattoos are "wrong" did have to come from somewhere and you've identified a couple I never even thought of.

Thank you!

I can add one more, though again I think it should be generalized. Tats are not my thing, but it is the thing of some friends. Really is a part of what they are. But many seem to have them to try to fit in. Others may not find that motivation 'sinfull' but I think it is at least a dangerous, though perhaps baby step in that direction.

If things were different I can think of at least one tat I migth have gone with. I have met several Marines who have basic medical info and identification tattooed on ttheir torso under their right arm. I'd go for that, it could save their life or at the least allow for identification so their kin can get closure.

If I were a bit more idealistic I might go for a white rose. As I am perhaps 29-7 though few would know what that refers to. (If I had the posts for a custom avatar you might have a very very slim chance of figuring it out).

Im confused on something.

I was talking with someone via PM and tattoos came up. They said that they felt tattoos were sinful because it was desecrating the temple of the body. But...that logic can be applied to anything we do to ourselves. Tanning, eating bad food, piercings, etc etc. So why are tattoos the only thing that are bad?

And yes I know about the "markings uppon the flesh" passage of the bible. However this is a specific practice that deals with cutting your skin when someone dies, something that was part of the tribal culture of the time when the bible was written and does not refer to the modern practice of tattooing.

So why is tattooing immoral?
How is tattooing helpful? How is it beneficial? If simply a style or fad, what happens when the fad becomes old hat. People can grow hair or cut hair. People can throw out a once real neat shirt. Earrings can be changed or removed. Body art may fade but it never goes away. It just turns blue.......

I have a tattoo, an outline of New Zealand on my right hip. I dont think it is a fad, because I didnt do it to impress anyone else. I like it a lot and it looks good. If, in the future, I decide to get rid of it, there are ways (that are expensive and painful) of getting rid of it.

Tattoos in general, IMHO is not sinful nor immoral, though I am bias since I have quite a few.

But; it is immoral for people to get tribal Maori for they are an insult to Maoris.

With so many people getting tattoos, there are many unscrupulous so-called artists out there.

Misinformed artist that don't know what they are inking.
Copied tribal art, copied gang art, copied military art.
All these should not be inked on people that are not of that group, in gang art, this could be dangerous.

Artist using too much detailed designs, that within a year of sun, and normal bleeds they become a disaster.

Artist using the Chinese, or Japanese alphabet, there is no Chinese nor Japanese alphabet , they are inking gibberish.
You hear horror stories of people getting Kanjis, or Chinese characters, and they come to find out they have something nasty written instead.

If you want a Kanjis, do lots of research, because even the internet have wrong translations, and ask 3 people who are not only fluent, but knows alternative slangs meanings for that word, or saying.

Tattoos aren't immoral, they're fun!

I've got a few, but my three favorites are:

1) My cartoon serial killer child on my right calf. See, the artist who did it does her original designs once, after which she marks them as "sold" in her flash book, never to be repeated. So I have a nice one-of-a-kind tattoo. :)

2) My Johnny Cash tribute that I drew myself. I, oddly, got it done the day before he died. In honor of his song "Thirteen," I've got the number 13 tattooed on the back of my neck, turning from black to red.

3) Just for pure, stereotypical tattoo - I LOVE MY NAKED DEVIL GIRL!

Plus, since it's right below the tattoo I got of my wife's name (accompanied by a swallow), some people think my wife's name goes with NAKED DEVIL GIRL! Which is funny. :)

I heard that getting someone's name tattooed on you almost always leads to the death of the relationship.

The tattoo artist I go to (well, went to and plan to go back to) has a whole book of cover-ups, mostly of names. To me, it seems like a bad idea to get a tattoo of someone's name.

I've heard that, too. I think it's mainly superstition, though. I'd be more concerned about getting a portrait tattoo. If the relationship goes south, that'll be hard to cover up.

I like to buck trends, anyway. :)

Very good point! I can see getting portrait tattoos of children or of someone who died (though I would rather get a tattoo that represents someone than just a tattoo of them), but not of significant others.

I don't think I'd get my husband's name tattooed on me, though. I love him, and plan to be with him forever, but it still doesn't seem like a good idea. I'm also a bit superstitious...

Yeah, my next tattoo is going to be representative of my daughter. But I don't know any good artists where I'm living now, so I may have to drive 100 miles to go to someone I trust.

I've got a Mycenaean labrys tattoo'd between my shoulder blades. Probably my next tatts will be paw prints from my pups.

Sidhe, maybe you could get a tattoo of your daughter's handprint?

That's a really cute idea. I'd have to get her to hold still to get a handprint from her, of course. :)

My other idea is that, since she's named after a gemstone, to get a tattoo of that gem. I just don't know where, since my job frowns on visible tats...

I have lots of tattoos so obviously I do not think they are immoral. I just think you should be careful when choosing a design--these are for life--so if you want something kinda risque (and I have several of those) you need to be ready to deal with it for the rest of your life--and the fact that someone may see it.

Lucky for me no one has had an issue with my more risque tattoos. :D

I dont think tattoos are immoral. Personally I would never get a husband/boyfriends name or chinese/japanese just because 20 years down the road if you arent with that person anymore or find out that the c/j doesnt mean what you thought it did (i read a story about a guy who got a waiter at a restraunt to write his name down for him, and i guess the waiter didnt know he was going to get it as a tattoo or he was not being nice, and wrote coca cola instead). of course this is just my personal opinion, if someone got a tattoo of their husband/ boyfriend/wife/girlfriends name or chinese/ japanese i wouldnt judge their decision its just not something i would choose for myself. As for tattoos being ugly i really think thats a matter of opinion and in this case the only person whose opinion matters is the person the tattoo is on, personally i have seen more tattoos that i think are nice than ones that arent, but i like tattoos so perhaps my opinion is slightly biased.

I'm not aware of any "alternative meaning" for anything but bear paw prints (which represent the gay bear community). Could you explain what dog prints mean (Google didn't seem to know either)?
