I am a S.S. teacher for jr.high and high school students. A few weeks ago, a question came up concerning tattoos. I gave my opinion by asking "does it honor God?". We discussed crosses and other tattoos that appeared to honor God. But what I need to know is what does the bible say about it? I need scripture and will appreciate your opinions.
Thanx

That's a tricky spot to be in cause whatever you say is what their parents are going to hear. I would say the best road to take would be the diplomatic one: answer the question without really saying anything.
I do know that the percentage of people who end up with hepatitis, even from the cleanest conditions, are pretty high. But it would probably help to have a source to back up that claim. I don't remember where I hear that so you'll have to find it yourself.

Personally, I think those ages are kind of young to decide such a thing. In five years or so, they can't change their mind and erase it. On the other hand, given the many choices you can screw up your life through rebellion, I don't have a problem with tatoos. So I kind of see tatoos and piercing as "smart" rebellion. If it provides an outlet other than drugs or whatnot...maybe bodyart isn't so bad.

I don't know whether or not tattoos HONOR God, but if a tattoo is a CHRISTIAN tattoo it's a great way to make a sort of silent, yet colorful, statement of what we believe. I think that a visual representation of Christ's influence on our lives is a quick way to bring Christ into someone's life who may not think of God otherwise. It serves as a symbol of what I hold as important - Christ!
As long as it's not promoting a sin (and I am aware that many individuals consider tattoos in themselves sinful) and is meaningful ... why not?
Since I got two Christian tattoos (and in all honesty sometimes I regret getting them...) I have been able to bring up my beliefs and be a witness to quite a number of people. I think of it as a permanent way to wear a "WWJD" bracelet... ;)
I believe that other tattoos based on other things rather than just God serve as a creative outlet. Just as people wear makeup, others choose to be inked. Perhaps it's just a personal opinion. Whatever it is though, I think it would be wise for anyone getting a tattoo to pray about it and wait to see if God gives guidance.

Leviticus 19:28: "You shall not... tattoo any marks on you." But on the contrary.... Paul himself advises us not to engage in foolish disputes and arguments over the law. He calls it useless and unprofitable (TITUS 3:9). So I don't really know. Leviticus also says not reap to the very edges of your field" (Leviticus 19:9) ... Hmm...

I have two stars on my back with my parent's first initial in each star. I got them Sept. 26, 2003. I can say I only want more. I am 18 and a Christian. I like what was said about it being better than doing drugs or what not. And it is like make-up, why do people put on make-up, because they want to look good, I bet you will find few churches who think make-up is a sin, but to me make-up seems to be more of a pride / following the cultural issue than tattoos. Tattoos (even non-christian ones) as a ministry opportunity I think is an amazing idea, people, especially my age, do not want Christianity, honestly to a lot of people seeing a WWJD bracelet will make them want to flee from your presence. Wearing a guitar shirt will bring about more opportunities than wearing a "Christian" T-shirt. I do feel that some tattoos are inappropiate, such as nude women and other foul images.

That is really the only verse in the Bible that talks about tattoos, but just look at the context around it, and see how well you follow the Jewish Law first. I am currently shaved and wearing a shirt made out of two types of material. I would tell them it is between them and God, and they have a few years to figure it out.
