  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi; good to see you; so you're from Malaysia, right?

Do many ppl have tattoos in Malaysia? In North America it used to be a man thing but now 59%- 70% or more of parlor clients are female. Many Christians get faith based designs that are proven effective in witness conversations.

I appreciate your reply ( not really expecting to get any actually ) ! Yes, it is still a taboo around here. It really depends on where you live. In the city, people are getting it like it is a norm. I can see people getting it to follow the trend or to express their emotion. So far, my research results found that 80% of the participant ( 95% from Malaysia) do not think it is a taboo and fully support getting a tattoo. I did not expand my research to the whole population in Malaysia but as far as I can tell you people in the city or more crowded are really getting OK with Tattoo. :)

Tattoos still taboo for employers: Those considering body art should 'think twice if they are looking for a job'

It its true unless u "cover up" the body art though. I've friends who don't really give a damn about it and just go for it ( He is kind of nerd though). He got it on this wrist, I guess he does not really care about how the employer going to see him. I think we are really fighting for it :) !

It should be more of a taboo in the US than it currently is. Most tattoos I see look terrible, like somebody took a sharpie to their skin. So many people put tons of random tattoos everywhere on their skin these days. If I see them from a distance I've sometimes thought people had unfortunate skin conditions until I realized they had purposefully done that. I automatically label someone as less intelligent when I see tattoos. Yes, that's judgmental of me and I have to fight that first impression. I never voice this because everyone seems to love the idea of defacing themselves these days.

Hi; YW; I think also, the term taboo might be expanded to refer either to a blanket use of the term, or else to refer to having visible tattoos in certain situations, such as the workplace.

So for example, a lot of people would not necessarily use the term taboo at all to refer to all 18-year olds everywhere who have it done at 18. But in terms of whether it should be covered in at least some business situations, this might be another matter.

Well, it's now regarded as a rite of passage for people entering adulthood.
No, it isn't. Under 18s get tattoos all the time now. It has little to nothing to do with being a rite of passage to adulthood in our culture. Even though it is more popular now, more people don't have tattoos than do. It has more to do with people wanting to commemorate events in their lives because they think their tattoos have meaning.

Well, in North America in many states and in all the Canadian provinces, 18 is the age; in some states it's younger, but 18 is the widely specified age. Doing it often goes with an 18th b-day, or thereabouts.

I love tattoos. I love seeing other's stories and their self expression. Just last night, I met a man who was once a drug addict and now a Christ-lover and follower. His tattoos tell his story of hitting rock bottom and overcoming the odds that we so highly stacked against him. I loved to see him thrive in Christ now knowing where he came from and his tattoos were an integral part of that story.

Seems the idea of a faith based tattoo appeals to you a lot, right?

It certainly does! I think what you said about it proving effective in witness conversations is very true. A friend of mine believes she has a certain knack for piercings and tattoos because it can aid her in connecting with people who otherwise may be turned off by other believers.

It used to be - decades back - that double pierced ears were just a bit edgy, fashion-wise; but now when grandmothers/great-grandmothers have them - having had them decades, it's so normal. Now, the young man with pierced ears (definitely both ears) serving in the coffee shop or supermarket might yet be rather conservative in many ways.

I guess getting tattooed is going the same way. The high proportion of women among parlor clients is significant; it used to be very much a man thing, years ago, but it's now become a very womanly thing to do, with many parlors being more like salons.

Many Christians have chosen to embrace the medium, instead of fighting it, and try to use it in witness with faith based ink, proven effective in conversation-starting.

(If this all makes sense?)

I took it. It seems like rather than taboo, they're becoming more of the norm. I think the key is to be able to hide it. I have several, myself, and all of them are hideable.
So are you done getting inked yet? and are any of yours faith based?

Hello, no I am not done getting inked. I have at least one more planned. My first tattoo, when I was 18, was of a water dragon, and it's not that great, very faded, I will have it redone with a normal dragon, curled around the Maltese cross, which is for both faith and my being a volunteer firefighter. On my other shoulder I have a large phoenix. On my chest, my largest piece is a brown trout and a rainbow trout looking up a parachute adams, which is a dry fly for fly fishing. My last one currently is an Armenian cross, (I'm Armenian) and at its' center is the evil eye, which for Armenians is to ward off evil.

So one is faith based, my next will be a combination of faith and fire fighting. Eventually I will get one more on my back that is also faith based, not sure what yet. And when I go in, I would like to add onto one my existing ones, my sobriety date, 11-05-07.

Thanks.

Congrats. on being successfully dry; a real achievement!

So do Armenians in Yerevan get inked a lot also? maybe there it's mostly men? (or maybe I'm wrong).
