  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It will be for a Canon Rebel XTi. I'm trying to decide which starter package I want to go with.

The Tamron 28-80 will be alright for snapshots but don't expect tack sharp photos and there will be some softness I find. As for the 75-300 it will also be soft especially at the 300 end. also expect some distortion from both lens. Like I say they are good for snapshots and some general purposes. If you really want some good lenses and are will to spend a bit more I would suggest the Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 or and the Canon 70-200 f4 non l lens. Also a good prime lens. I use the Canon EF 50mm 2.5 Macro lens and it is very sharp and also will do 1/2 size macro. Take a look on ebay for some good buys on them. Hope this helps.

Do you think that the Tamron lenses would be ok for portraits? Or would they be even too soft for that? I can't really afford anything of better quality - can't really even afford the camera in the first place :D $800 is the absolute top of my budget and I found this kit with the Tamron lenses for $759. My only other option in my budget really is to just stick with the standard kit lens.

The Canon 50mm 1.8 lens would be a great option for you. It's a very sharp lens and is an amazing value for its price of $75. You can get a new XTi with 18-55 kit lens for $600-$650, a CF card for $50ish, and the 50mm lens for $75. That would put you under your max price.

Hmm, I'll take a look around and see what I can find.

Yes the 50mm 1.8 would be a great lens or the 50mm 2.5 Macro but that goes for around $200.00 on ebay, as for the 18-55 I would stay clear as I see many are disappointed with it's performance.

Hi Mrs. A2J,

I shoot with the Rebel XTi and I thought I'd mention that the lenses that are kitted with the body are pretty sad lenses. I bought mine with IS lenses though and I'm very, very happy with them ... but they weren't cheap of course.
I've shot with the 18-55 kit lens before. A friend of mine bought his with it and asked me to try it out because he just couldn't get a decent photo with it. He wanted to know if it was him or the lens.
... it was the lens.
Tamron lenses are kinda low-end but they're not the end of the world.
The 75-300 is an ok lens. I've shot with it and if you keep it on a tripod and use a remote switch, you'll be pretty happy with your results. ( I highly suggest a remote switch btw. It will solve the camera shake from pressing the button on sensitive focusing shots. I bought mine for only $20 and it's great. )

The 28 - 80 kit lens takes a little more patience, but if you've got the remote trigger, you can get a decent shot. If you're just starting out with the XTi and these are your first lenses, keep in mind that better lenses will yield infinitely better shots .... but do consider that remote switch. It'll do wonders for your tripod shooting.

JD - shoots with an XTi and thought he'd toss in a couple pennies worth of opinion there ...
