  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I say 'Oh God' quite a lot but for some reason object to 'Jesus Christ' bring used as an expletive. Not logical, but there it is!

Funny... I've never, ever, made that connection, and I'm the same way. :)

It doesn't bother me so much when others do it; I don't have the energy to worry about what other people say (especially since my boss says it ALL of the time; I'd be exhausted) -- but I remember years ago when I was much younger and used the "JC" phrase, probably often.

It even had to be said properly to be effective -- the emphasis had to be placed quite stringently on the 2nd word for it to bring any satisfaction. I wonder why that was.

I'm happy to say that I don't use the phrase anymore, haven't for some time, but you bring up a good point -- it's not logical at all, but I bet a lot of us feel the same way!

I agree, but also JC actually irks me more than the F word.

None of them bother me so much as long as people aren't constantly spewing them. I never could understand people who use the F word (and worse) six times per sentence... what do they do when they DO drop a box on their foot and really NEED that "oomph" word? There's nothing left! :D

Hi:wave:

Just wondered what people thought when they hear the lord's name being taken in vain i.e as a swear word? Does it make you sad, mad, whatever?
I've been known to let it slip a few times in the past but I'm trying hard to get rid of that habit. Now when I hear it it makes me cringe and feel kind of sad. When people keep using it over and over it just really saddens me at their irreverence.

If folk don't believe in God then they have nothing to be reverent about!
true, but it's suppose to be that you're respecting other people anyway, just in case someone who is a christian is there. just like i dont go around and throw the "n" word around when black people are around or at all because its offensive..

What does that mean exactly? What is the Lord's name we are not to take vainly? Jesus? Yeshua? Ieshua? Yhwh? Jehovah? God? El Shaddai? What does it mean to take it in vain? This is one of those Christianese phrases I have trouble with.

you make an interseting point here KCDAD. i'm not saying i'm wanting to be a sailor when i talk, but it makes you wonder tho what is vain? i mean is the word "God" then name of God? "God" has many names. we know this in the Bible, and we know this because of the different religions. so would using Allah in "vain" be the same as taking God's name in vain?

and what's vain? is it using the name of God during times of anger, frustration? or is it dissing God period?

interesting thoughts here KCDAD! :)

Taking His name upon the lips or thinking of Him in such a way other than to Glorify and Magnify Him.
AGREE !!! Those casual uses of the name God that are thrown around make me nervous. I can hear the F word all day or anything else but the Lord's name in vain REALLY bothers me.

ASIDE: Lord ha!

DHOH lyrics:
"Drugs Lords and LandLords and Praise-the-Lords... they prey upon us"

I forgot, the word Lord doesn't mean God to me, it'sjust a weird phrase! It's someman who has been knighted!

I thought knights were 'sirs;' e.g Sir Bob Geldof. Lords are part of the peerage, sit in the House of Lords all day drinking Moet with their pate de fois gras. Ex PM's are sometimes made Lords. I wonder if Blair will be . . .
