I mainly take the bus, especially in the winter season and whenever the distance is too long for walking or riding a bike. You do learn the routes and schedules by heart quite quickly when you actually start using the bus. I've grown up with using public transport though so it's kinda obvious for me.

I love buses.
Cheaper than a car, no worry about getting lost (providing you're on the right one), and otherwise just brilliant.
Except when you live in the middle of nowhere.
One bus once a week doesn't quite allow you to travel about as much as one would like.

I have no advice for the bus system.
I look at the buses that go through areas I need to be, get on them, press the buzzer when I need to get off and my bank balance prefers the £18.50 for a weekly pass than the £30 in petrol it would otherwise cost.

Plus you get great craic on the bus, sometimes.
:sorry:

LOL yeah... I think the tickets are even cheaper in Helsinki - I pay like 20ish euros a month and I get to use all buses, trams, metros and trains in the city as much as I like. :p [I get a student discount though, but the real one isn't any more expensive the twice the price.] Plus parking costs a million in the city, as well as petrol unless you want to smuggle some from Russia every moth or so... :p

But then, what the heck is a craic? :sorry: I couldn't find it in a dictionary LOL

That is great value for a month of public transport!
Oh yes, parking. Blah! Always so expensive, or restricted to residents with their magical parking discs.

Haha, in this sense craic just means good conversation. Just means fun in general really, depending on who you ask XD

Keep plenty of change, tokens or whatever the bus system uses for currency.
Also keep money for a taxi in case you miss the bus (it happens).
If the bus is full, be a gentleman and offer your seat to any lady who doesn't have one.

I take the bus I think maybe 3 or more times in everyday. It's the normal way to travel in here. Most people travel on the bus or on the subway. I think it is the similar thing between Korea and Japan. When I am in Japan I also travel in bus or subway everyday. I think it's very easy to find the way. Usually I'm reading the sign to know where it does go. If I want to make sure it is the right direction, then I am asking the bus driver if they go to my stop. The bus driver is very helpful about that. These days I am in Korea, so I follow my cousin to find the right bus.

I take the bus 4 days a week its really not that bad and the cost isn't to much the wait time can be a hassle but its cheaper then driving a car if it goes in the area you need to go with out having to transfer too many times.

Wow, not too many city slickers in this forum, huh? :)

The bus is FINE. Sure, there is the occasional creeper, homeless dude, what have you... but that's pretty much true of any place you're going to go in an urban area.

The convenience of it entirely depends on your particular location, penNpaper. In SF, we like to complain about our bus system but it's one of the best in the country.

I remember when I first moved here from a quiet little suburb, and I was scared to death to take the bus! But I got over it. You can look up routes and pretty much anything else about it on the agency's website, and if you have a smartphone you can even check the schedule and when the next bus is coming right at the stop if there's no digital sign (which there often is). If you want any more advice, feel free to PM me. :)

I also have to say I'm impressed with the prices of passes mentioned so far!! Our monthly pass is $60-$70, depending on the options you want.
