As past history shows, taking the Bible literally HAS led to dire consequences with the dark side of Christianity exposing itself in all sorts of horrors. Not taking the Bible literally can lead to some dire consequences.
Hermeneutics, improperly applied, can lead to junk theology. What about hermeneutics?
Would you know it if you did?So lets get this right ...
True Christianity doesn't have a "dark side."As past history shows, taking the Bible literally HAS led to dire consequences with the dark side of Christianity exposing itself in all sorts of horrors.
Don't get me started on global warming until you give up:In today's world, it's led to denial of earth sciences in it's various forms with consequences of a lot of deaths because of global warming.
You don't think so, but those who took the Bible literally sure believed what they were doing did fit in with the Bible. And even today I've watched literal interpenetration take people into questionable political beliefs and conspiracy theories and actions based on end time stuff.True Christianity doesn't have a "dark side."
It might look like it in an academic setting, but attributing the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Salem Witch Trials to Christianity doesn't fit in with the Bible.
Yep...exactly, with consequences that science had taken a back seat.Don't get me started on global warming until you give up:
- your gas-powered car
- your cement patio
- your glass windows
- your barbecue grill
- your fireplace
- drinking pop
- your CO2 extinguisher
But did the Bible fit in with them? You don't think so, but those who took the Bible literally sure believed what they were doing did fit in with the Bible.
Well for one, the Bible doesn't start out, ONCE UPON A TIME.
For another, Jesus took the Scriptures literally.
For another, the Bible almost always alerts us as to a vision, a parable, or a dream.
Not taking the Bible literally can lead to some dire consequences.
Note one of the Ten Commandments, which says:I don't think Jesus took the Bible as a 6-day creation account, which is necessary for your view. Can you demonstrate he did take the creation story as a literal 6 days?
If Genesis used "day" in a figurative way, then this could as well.Note one of the Ten Commandments, which says:
Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

How did the angiospermes survive without a sun, if "day" in Genesis 1 was an extended period of time?If Genesis used "day" in a figurative way, then this could as well.
In your opinion, how long was it then?@Kylie is right. It could very well mean differently than 6 literal days. Just because the word Day is used (yom) does not mean that it means 24 hours. The word is very flexible like a lot of Hebrew words.
In your opinion, how long was it then?
If we go with the assumption that when God, an almighty creator who can do anything, created the world in six periods that were referred to metaphorically as "days" but were actually a lot longer, how could they survive? Hmmm, that's a good question. If only there was some all-powerful being around who could have done something, let's call it a "miracle"...How did the angiospermes survive without a sun, if "day" in Genesis 1 was an extended period of time?
I don't need science to tell me the earth is old.The Bible doesn't say exactly. That's why I was agnostic on the issue for quite a while. Then I believed in an old earth, now IDK what I believe, but I'm definitely keeping my options open. But science says the earth is old. IDK that we can narrow it down so precisely with science, but it generally says the earth is very old.
It's one of those days that takes as long as it takes. (when evening ends, and the light brings the morning, that is the definition of a "day")In your opinion, how long was it then?
Did ... did you just suggest we call it a "miracle"!?If we go with the assumption that when God, an almighty creator who can do anything, created the world in six periods that were referred to metaphorically as "days" but were actually a lot longer, how could they survive? Hmmm, that's a good question. If only there was some all-powerful being around who could have done something, let's call it a "miracle"...
Can you think of such a being?
How about one rotation of a planet on its axis? It's one of those days that takes as long as it takes. (when evening ends, and the light brings the morning, that is the definition of a "day")
Well, on the assumption that the Bible is correct and the days described in Genesis were figurative days rather than literal, then this assumption includes a God who can do such things, so why not?Did ... did you just suggest we call it a "miracle"!?
