  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Take a hike!

This forum is getting to be more and more of a bummer with each passing week. People whining and complaining about being single or not having friends - yet many of those same people don't seem to be very proactive with self improvement and taking the steps that might be necessary to get what they want.

Okay, that's my mini-rant for the week.

What this thread's about is for people to share what kinds of trips and outdoor activities they plan to go on/participate in during 2016. It could be a weekend snowboarding trip to Boreal, a day trip to a nearby city, or just a day hike in a national/municipal park.

The point is to promote outdoor activity that isn't just physically healthy but emotionally healthy as well. Getting outside gives a person perspective, they can think about their circumstances from a different point of view and maybe make wiser decisions and consider new approaches to those things that trouble them. If those of us who have been moaning about the lack of romance in our lives take every opportunity to get outside and be active, then chances are either romance as a priority will be put in it's proper place in our lives, or we'll have new ideas on how to engage the issue.

Share pics if you have them; plans if you're making them! Need some ideas? Maybe we can suggest some things, depending on your location.

Things are still in the works but over my Spring Break in March I'm either going to visit my older sister in Reykjavík, or I'm going to visit a buddy of mine up in Portland.

Over the summer my dad and I are going to fly back to Boston so we can take in the city and see the Giants on the road against the Red Sox.

I'll probably go on a few dozen hikes in our huge park, and make a few day trips up to Lassen Volcanic National Park,
lv-125.jpg

and Mount Shasta,
wpid238-fixed-horizon.jpg

Burney Falls,
burney-falls-water-over.jpg

Maybe a weekend to Redwood National Park
redwood-national-park-road-maintenance.jpg

Let's here your ideas and plans!

This is such a great idea for a thread. I love all the amazing scenery shots you posted. I'm not sure if I will have the opportunity to go on a big trip this year (still considering possibilities), but I have a few smaller things planned. I'm definitely going to sign up for another half marathon in my area for this spring or summer. I've run on one course several times in the past that winds along the course of the gorge of the Niagara River and ends up at the whirlpool by the Falls. I also might look at some scenic races further from me. Maybe, I'll try to make a weekend trip out of one of them.

I'm not sure if this counts (not really a hike) but I love spending time at the beach on the Great Lakes (I live near Lake Ontario and Lake Erie). I find it so soothing and enjoyable swimming in the lakes. I love the sense of adventure and freedom that swimming in the open water provides. I'm definitely planning to spend lots of time at those lakes this summer.

Romantic relationships aren't even on my mind at this point in time. ^_^ Any boyfriend of mine would get neglected because of my schedule. Do not want.

I plan to start working after graduation (fingers crossed), so I'll hopefully have a little money to go on weekend trips. :) I haven't looked into it yet, but I'd love to check out the national parks in my region.

The only trip plans I have are going to spend my birthday with my friends (hopefully), going to a nice little hiking area when Spring comes around, and going out of state for a wedding. It kind of depends on my health. I think you do have the right idea, we do need to be more proactive not only on this board but also most of us need to be a little more proactive in our lives.

Depends on how hungry I am.... I HAVE ate quite a bit of taco bell in my day........ so Im pretty much guaranteed to have ingested much worse because it was in taco form. ^_^

This thread looks like fun! I run a lot in really gorgeous places and I'm quite an outdoor fanatic. I would also love to go on a back packing trip when summer comes around. I've already gone on a couple and they are always so much fun.

I plan to travel extensively....

... with my taste buds and in my imagination to the glorious vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco this year. I've decided that it's Nebbiolo year for me and that these two wine regions of Piedmont will serve as my guides to the splendid terroir. First on my list is a 2005 Pio Cesare Barbaresco.

I joined a Christian hiking group through Meetup last year, and we went for our first hike of the year on Saturday.

I enjoy casual hiking. There are numerous places to hike near where I live, so I can easily just take a few hours out of any free day and go off somewhere to relax and enjoy nature.
These are some places I've been:
I forgot the name of this trail, it's been a couple of years.

San Xian Tai - Iit's a tiny island you get there by walking across a funny bridge, and then you just walk around the island, takes about three hours depending on which trail you take. About two hours from where I live.

Taroko Gorge. Very famous tourist attraction, so even though it's only about half an hour away, I've only been there twice in three years.

Some of the whinging-about-being-single, and sadface-me-has-no-friends, threads are entertaining after awhile. I can usually count on them to make me laugh after a long day out in the world.

Back to the topic at hand! I usually make it a deliberate thing to block out my Saturdays and take a day trip out of town (rarely more than 3 hours away at the farthest) because it gives me a chance to literally get away from everything - the good, the bad and the in between - and unwind for a day. I also get a lot more perspective, and can usually think much clearer, about things in my life when I'm physically outside of them.
Sometimes a day spent exploring Center City Philadelphia or our state capital can do wonders.
Over the last three years, I've saved up over the first half of the year and taken a longer trip each summer, and I want to do that again this year, depending on what my work and overall schedule look like.
I've also been into smartphone photography for the last couple of years, so all these things meld together into a delicious bowl of awesome stew.

I'm not sure if this counts (not really a hike) but I love spending time at the beach on the Great Lakes (I live near Lake Ontario and Lake Erie). Hey, another New York person! I've heard so, so many good things about Wegmans, but have yet to experience it firsthand.

Driving through Ohio, I was reminded that there are a few really cool national museums in the Dayton area that are free (National Museum of the Air Force). So my goal is to get my family down there ... even for a fun day trip. I walk too much at work to consider a hike "fun" but do love to learn about history so will walk miles at a museum site. Spending time in the same car also allows us to reconnect as a family.

I also want to get up to the upper peninsula of Michigan for a mini-vacation (probably can't afford more than a couple days off work and trying to schedule it between my kids school & work schedules ... and the fact none of us get the weekends off on a regular basis ... also complicates matters).

It's a shame that only a few will have the perspective broad enough to visualise and comprehend FULLY what you're saying - particularly the part in bold. I don't mean to sound crass, or even condescending, but this forum is chock full of polarised thinkers. And that's what creates the problems for most people.

Everything needs to be a 'certain way' these days, or it's nothing at all. No one lives fluid any more.

I haven't gone hiking for a while and probably wont for a little while longer since its oddly cold in arizona and my weekends are rather busy!

However, I love the idea. I think for some people however, hiking might not be their thing. Maybe some kind of hobby that takes them out of the house, or even some kind of event or such that really puts things in perspective for people.

Like for me, doing things for others really reminds me that things like dating, romance, and such are not a big deal!

Actually, I am not a New Yorker, haha. I live in Ontario right near the NY border. I am just a crazy Yankee fan and that confuses everyone. I know about Wegmans through coworkers/ relatives but I don't recall ever going there myself
