Unique mammal traits like gaits, teeth type and fur evolved long before mammals even emerged in the fossils record - they where the therapsids in mid permian and the cynodonts at the end of the permian - the lineages that was a pre-runner to all mammalian forms - a little twig on the synapsid-tree that survived the big extinction event at the end of the permian period.
