Switching to a Domain Name

I'd like to move my blog over to my own server and domain name eventually. I've found someone that hosts on a server for 3 dollars a month, and where to buy a domain name...but I'm still really lost as to what I'm doing lol. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it
