  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Lindy hop is the swing dance of the swing era, and it is defnitely worth learning. There's definitely a wonderful feel to it that other dances don't have. I've been doing it for a few years, and I love it. There's always more to learn, so it never really gets boring. If you get involved in lindy exchanges and other national events, you can continuously learn new things about it.

I've also gotten into balboa, and while I'm not into it as much as lindy hop, it can add quite a bit of variety. It's easier to pick up on the basics of balboa, but I've found it much harder to excel at it.

Hee hee! That's why my user name is rumbagirl---I love to ballroom dance!
Swing is great fun, and the music is so infective. You have to move your feet when you hear it. Couples dancing is also something that is missing in our society, so anytime young folks want to learn this type of dance, I am so happy!!

The whole world should dance!!! It would make the world a better place:clap:

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I have a couple questions:

1. How long does it take to learn to swing dance?

2. Would you suggest going to a swing dance class with a friend, or is it better to go alone?

3. Would a 17-year old who's never danced before enjoy it (or even be able to do it for that matter)?

If someone has the time, I would be really appreciative it if they could answer these three questions for me. Thanks a lot!

1. Depends on the person -- the basics can be learned in about an hour, but if you don't put in practice time then you won't memorize it and get better.

2. I recommend either going to a group lesson or talking a group of guys & girls into going. I also recommend dancing with multiple partners to experience different leading styles.

3. Yes, I learned when I was 18. The youngest girl I knew in lessons was 16.

It depends on your learning ability and the type of dance you're wanting to learn. Most people can pick up some basic six-count swing or east coast swing in a one-hour lesson and learn enough to have some fun on the dance floor. Lindy hop or west coast swing will probably take a few weeks to become comfortable with, but they can be a lot of fun if you learn them.

I don't really think that one is better than the other. If you have a friend who wants to go, by all means take them. If not, it's no big deal. Many people I know who started swing dancing, including me, did so on their own.

Absolutely! The earlier you start, the better you can become at it. I didn't start until I was 22, but I do wish I had done some dancing earlier. I know many people who started in their early teens and are still at it. One of the best performance I've ever seen was done by a couple who were both only 17.
