Anyone else in urban missions?

Is there anyone else who is finding themselves surrounded on all sides by the enemy?

In particular, in the cities while evangelizing?

Its so hard some times to see the good that we might be possibly doing

Amidst the constant threats of crime, homelessness, gangs, hustling, prostitution and so on.

Most do not repent

This is the key to transformation

Trump wants to clean up the cities

We need his help

It breaks my heart to see yet another Narcan vending machine set up in a new location

Because it symbolizes the constant struggle with ever new downward trending cities, buckling under the duress

With no place to afford to live, cut programming and lots of hopelessness

We reach out....but in these times, can people truly change their lives around?

We invite people to services and most often, they do not come

They keep doing what they're doing in order to survive due to having no where to rest

We need housing with programming required to stay there

So today, as in an answer to prayer, I met a man who was struggling to have enough food to eat and to just survive in general.

He knew Jesus, and was concerned about whether Jesus still loved him, because he was afraid he had blasphemed the Holy Spirit.

We talked a little bit in this amazing and unexpected encounter, and he said he repented of all his sins and asks to do his will every day in prayer.

He asked me to pray for him to have the strength he needs every day to get through these tough times

I told him that I would most definitely pray for him but only after addressing with him the fact that he had not blasphemed the HS based upon all that he shared with me.

I invited him to come to receive Holy Communion.

Strange days strange times, feeling overwhelmed and then this happens!

A fish.

Thank you Lord Jesus!

God has His timing in these things. I was bought up in a Christain home, heard the gospel many times but did not give my life to Jesus for 20 years. Don't be discouraged if people don't "instantly" change. You are sowing seed.

Sometimes I get pulled into the intercessory aspect of it. It's brutal, one minute I'm fine, the next all these afflictions placed on me. Oh well, not like it's a new thing.

God bless for reaching out.

@Lukaris and @Pop D. thank you for your prayers!

We all really need them when we go out there.

Going out and doing the great commission is hard in the cities in the us right now

Somehow I wish we could join ranks with President Trump who wants to clean up the cities

Is not recovery spiritual?

Psalm 139:5-7

You have surrounded me on every side, behind me and before me,
and You have placed Your hand gently on my shoulder.
6 It is the most amazing feeling to know how deeply You know me, inside and out;
the realization of it is so great that I cannot comprehend it.
7 Can I go anywhere apart from Your Spirit?
Is there anywhere I can go to escape Your watchful presence?

@rebornfree thank you so much for your prayers!
You are very welcome, joymercy. It seems that you are doing a great job there. You know when Israel reached the sea and they were surrounded by the enemy, the Lord parted the sea. He can do miracles.

Helping in practical ways is so important to people in desperate need as is just taking the time to talk to them. They are no longer the overlooked.

I agree. It can take time. I've not been involved in urban mission, as I've lived in fairly small towns for 30+ years, although I have talked to and prayed with homeless people. Where I live my immediate community consists mainly of people whose lives are reasonably okay, but they have little interest in God. I pray and invite them to church, social evenings, etc. but there's little response.Sometimes it takes time.

Joymercy you are sowng seed. God bless you. Remember Isaiah 55 v 10-11.

As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower
and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Isaiah 55 v10-11 (NIV)

A major challenge with evangelism today is that most people have already heard the message "Jesus loves you" many times. After hearing this, they then think to themselves that if He loves me, then I must be a good person, and so therefore I will make it to heaven. To them, the Gospel seems unnecessary or even foolish because they have been told only part of the message.
Before sharing the Good News, people must first understand the bad news: they are sinners before a holy and righteous God who hates sin and will judge the world in righteousness. When someone truly sees their guilt and realises they are under God’s condemnation, then the Gospel becomes good news indeed.
Sadly, many have been dulled to the truth by repeatedly hearing only, “Jesus loves you,” without the Scriptures that also declare God’s hatred of sin and of those who persist in evil.
This is why we must follow the example of Jesus, Paul, and the disciples: use the Law to reveal sin. The Law shines a light onto our guilt and shows us we are not worthy. Some will resist, and even some Christians may dislike this approach, but others will see themselves rightly and realise their desperate need for a Saviour.
As has often been said, biblical evangelism is “Law to the proud, grace to the humble.” If someone comes broken over sin, confessing, “I’ve sinned against God. I’m an adulterer, a liar, what should I do?” then we give them grace and point them to the cross. But such humility is rare. For most, we must first use the Law to strip away their false sense of goodness.
Many think they will enter heaven because of their morality. Scripture warns that even at the Judgment, many people confess their own goodness. They must be shown that they have already broken God’s law, fallen short of His standards, and that “the wages of sin is death.”

John Wesley once wrote, “Preach 90 percent law and 10 percent grace.” That may sound extreme, but consider this:
A doctor faces a patient who appears healthy, young, strong, and outwardly fit. Yet the doctor knows from X-rays that the man has only two weeks to live. A cure is ready on the desk. Should the doctor immediately offer it? Of course, not; the patient would reject it, believing he has no need. Instead, the doctor wisely shows the X-rays, pointing out the deadly disease until the man feels the weight of his condition. Only then will he eagerly embrace the cure. Our disease is sin. The cure is Christ.
This is why preaching Christ without first exposing sin is meaningless to the lost. As Paul wrote, “the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing” (1 Cor 1:18). They need the Law first.
-“Through the law comes the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20)
-“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul…” (Psalm 19:7)
-“Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” (Galatians 3:24)

Quotes:
  • “He who preaches the Gospel without preaching the Law of God may hold all the results of it in his hand and there will be little for him to hold.” Charles Spurgeon
  • “If you downplay the radical depravity of man, then you downplay the glory of the Gospel.” Paul Washer

Their situation is so sad. I think many places need affordable housing. Are they not interested in learning more about the gospel or are they worried about feeling different to those in church or unsure about what it will be like? Is it possible to do something specifically for those in the same situation? Sorry if I'm stating the obvious. You are doing a wonderful Christlike ministry. God bless you.

Intercession is really important, but it must be hard feeling such a burden. God bless.

I am not saying that anyone here is doing this, but we also need to be careful that, as well as pray for the lost, we need to put legs to our prayers and share the Gospel. To pray for the lost and then to do nothing is nothing but empty hypocrisy.
(Just thought that I would add this because it may make some people reflect)

@rebornfree thank you so much for your support and kind words.

You ask some very good questions.

Mainly, I think that its made clear that no one can possibly "just get a job," if they have zero sleep from keeping guard all night so no one takes their stuff, or assaults them when sleeping either in a shelter or in the park or in some ones yard for example.

Without anywhere to take a shower or bath, no place nor money for laundry, how can anyone present themselves for a job interview?

Some who appear rough are escorted out or given very stern looks by church security

I think that from what I'm seeing its a need for housing first, so that then a person can focus and concentrate on recovery

I think that they cannot come to services because they are exhausted, seeking counseling for trauma, going to court cases, probation, obtaining food and trying to find hygiene products among examples

Often trying to obtain basic needs requires going all over town and this requires bus fare too and so there's pan handling often

People are most likely open to conversation when being kind and welcoming and just talking with them and finding out how they are doing

Mercy and love are soothing

@1Tonne yes, there is establishing love and kindness and also after this, the sharing of the gospel and inviting people to Bible study.

However, it can get a bit challenging as last time I went out recently, a woman picked up the scripture readings we were talking about off of a table, took out her bic lighter, and set them on fire.

No kidding.

I have been constantly praying every day since to try and remain calm and put my trust in Jesus!

Yes, evangelism can be challenging. But it makes for great work stories. For instance, three times Paul was beaten with rods, once he was pelted with stones, three times he was shipwrecked. He also spent a night and a day in the open sea. Awesome work stories :)

Just also adding. These stories can make you a very interesting person. Most Christians just do their everyday job 5 days a week and then sport on Saturday and Church on Sunday. But you now have a story that no one else has. You had a lady burn your Gospel tracts, which is pretty extreme. I pray for more great stories.

Don't underestimate intercession. Some people have a burden to intercede and I don't think that it's particularly easy. A friend said that "the battle is won on our knees", another that "prayer is the engine room of the church". I've seen ministries start and flourish because of prayer (and sometimes fasting). I don't think I'm particularly called to intercede, more than anyone else, but I have known people who have a particular heart for it.

That surprises me. Most Christians I know are not just Sunday Christians. It explains some of your posts though.
