• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Does anyone know if suppressing your emotions can cause depression?
I thought I was good at dealing with my emotions but I think I'm just suppressing them. I think its mainly when I have to deal with death that I suppress them and don't actually go through the grieving process. In everyday life I do feel angry, hurt, sad, etc.

I think so. Cramming things down usually have bad habit of coming back up.

Also we have the freedom to cry and feel pain for others. Never feel like you have to hold it in.

Surpressing emotions is really bad simply because it doesn't work,
It comes out all at once over the daftest things.
For example I took alot of personality bashing and had alot of anger in me and sleepless nights, Then I dropped a small glass on the floor and cried my eyes out like the world was going to end.

Its good to vent regularly even if its in a private journal, or put a sad film on just to use it as an excuse to get it out of your system without people expecting it
(Yeah you can tell I have practive huh ?)

I don't know if suppressing your emotions can cause full blown depression. But I do know that suppressing your emotions can cause depressive feelings to surface

I agree. Sometimes I have even vented to God, quite angrily. I don't think it bothers Him at all. It feels good that I can be totally honest with Him without fearing His retribution.
