  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know a house church planter in Indonesia named Dave. He is Indonesia (well, with some Chinese and Dutch thrown in), but has a western name. I have known Dave for years through the Internet. He is familiar with authors of house church in the US. Biblical house church is a relatively small movement here in Indonesia.

I met Dave on a couple of occasions. He introduced 'house
church' concepts to a missions organization working with unreached people
group segments of one of the larger people groups here in Indonesia. He
headed up a team of church planters who won 125 souls in 10 house churches
over 7 years. Then, he moved to 'oikos', a church ministry in Surabaya
where he does 'house church' type meetings with their youth. Dave is
probably one of the most active promoters of Biblical HC here in Indonesia
that I've met. He also seems to have a great heart for evangelizing and
discipleship, particularly for youth.

Dave was in a gang as a youth, before his conversion. The other gang
members were members of the 'S' people group, the largest unreached people
group in the country, with over 99% of them being Mslims. Dave speaks
fluent 'S'. Next year he wants to move back to the city where he used to be
a gang member, the heart of S culture, and open a safe house for gang
members and subculture types.

I remember when I visited Dave, a young Bible college lecturer who would
later get in trouble for teaching Biblical house church teachings at a
seminary , and one of the leaders of 'Oikos'. I was talking about theology
with the seminary professor in the car. Dave was looking out the window.
He seems pretty knowledgeable in Biblical issues, so I wondered why he wasn't
paying attention. He had seen a group of skaters on a street corner. I
asked him what he was thinking. He was thinking about reaching those
skaters.

I have supported Dave financially some. Next year, though, I plan to go
back to the US for grad school. Dave will need a source of funds for the
safe house and his livelihood. He is looking for some sort of job or
whatever to earn a living.

I have often thought that it would be good if there were some kind of 'house
church' outlet for house church people to give missions funds. I know some
HCs are not into offerings at all. I mentioned the idea of supporting Dave
financially on HCDL. I didn't get a single response. I know there are some
HCs into missions, giving, and things like that. Do you know of any house
churches that would like to support Dave? I find it ironic that most
of the workers I know here doing HC who do get foreign missionary support
get it from larger institutional churches or missions organizations in the
US, while there is a growing number of house churches in the US that really
see the benefits of house church.

Do you have nay advice for me on how to help Dave get set up with some
funding. Btw, he did not ask me to do this and I have not told him I am
sending you this message.

One of the ideas among many home groups is that people take care of themselves in this area . Instead of relying on others , people can take up employment where they are going or have the funds before venturing forth .

The man is question is willing to work a secular job, if necessary.

But if you look at the Bible, they that preach of the Gospel should live of the Gospel. The church should be supporting them. Church planters who evangelize unbelievers and win them to Christ are 'preachers.'

If you look at the bible, (not at a verse out of context) they who planted the churches, worked for their living.

And yes, if the church decides to support a worker she will support him/them for sometime, but not in a regular basis.

Only the church or churches that worker has planted will support him, if needed and when needed, not other churches and/or organizations from all over the world.

Look at I Corinthians 9. Paul and Barnabas worked outside of ministry, but the apostles and the Lord's brethren were supported by the churches.

Paul waived his right for support among the Corinthians for the greater good, but he had a right to receive it while he was laboring among them. Paul said 'they that preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel.'

Jesus told the disciples to enquire who in a city or town was worthy and stay with that person, eating the food that was set before them, for a laborer is worthy of his hire.

Let's get our understanding from scripture, not overreacting against IC practices.
