The RCC justifies its doctrine of Purgatory by reference to a constellation of passages (one of which does not show up in the reduced canon IIRC) and their implications. Debates over annihilationism and ECT and so on rage based on prooftexted translations. So what if the solution to those debates is the Catholic one, except more complex? What if there are several more afterlife/final-judgment options than just Heaven and Hell?

Some "planes of existence" based just on descriptors being added together and mixed around:

Heaven
NS (neutral state, neither happy nor sad) before Heaven (Abraham's Bosom?)
CT (conscious torment) before Heaven (Purgatory)
NS2 (annihilation?)
NS
CT before NS1/2 (Limbo?)
Eternal CT (Hell)
Now before you quote the sheep-and-the-goats to me, let's say you can take these multiple afterlife-planes and separate them into two categories. Then eternal life is one category of these, and eternal punishment is the other category.
