165,000 heed ban and quit smoking

Press Assoc. - 1 hour 12 minutes ago

Almost 165,000 smokers managed to kick their habit around the time of the smoking ban, figures show.

They all quit between April and September 2007 - around the time of the July 1 ban in England.

The figures represent a 28% rise in the number of people giving up and a 29% increase in the number of people setting a quit date through
NHS Stop Smoking Services compared with the same period in 2006.

The figures were released by the Information Centre for health and social care (IC).

Their report looked at the number of smokers setting a quit date and the number who had successfully given up by a four-week follow-up.

In England during the period April to September 2007, 327,800 people set a quit date through NHS Stop Smoking Services, a 29% increase on the same period in 2006.

At the four-week follow-up, half of these (164,711 people) had successfully quit.

Most of those setting a quit date (74%) received only nicotine replacement therapy to help them quit, such as patches.

A further 10% received only the
drug Champix (varenicline), while 4% only received the drug Zyban (bupropion).

Less than 1% received both NRT and Zyban.

A total of 6% of people setting a quit date did not receive any smoking cessation help and the type of treatment was unknown in a further 6%.

Champix, which is a non-nicotine drug, was the most successful smoking cessation aid.

Of those who used Champix, 64% successfully quit, compared with 53% who received Zyban only, and 48% who received NRT.

The total expenditure on NHS Stop Smoking Services was £26.7 million.

This compares with £23.4 million in the same period in the year 2006/07.

========================================================================================

Funny enough, it was only when I had to keep 2 appointments that the travel & waiting gave God the chance to show me that the reason He asked me to ask folk to fwd that health report is that many USA folk are wheezing & even choking inside, spiritually

Also, of course, nearly all of us know folk ruining their health thru smoking & booze. drugs, over-eating

Turning 60 on Sunday meant friends challenging me to do 90 mins a day gym, 6 days a week & get as strong & healthy as poss, to encourage the many folk here in Bootle

We have @ 3 times UK average % of folk with chest complaints & breathing difficulties thru dust from coal, flour & bone meal blowing from Liverpool Freeport at nearby Bootle Docks

& yet so many smoke & make it worse

We sure need to pray that folks everywhere will be drawn to The Great Physician, the Prince of Peace, yes?

God bless USA :amen:

& pray www.passport.gov.uk send me the passport I was promised @ 4/5 years ago -so Mercy Cosmos Miracle Community - MCMC - can help bless USA in spring/fall ;)
