A question for all Salvationists wherever you liveDo you still have a Sunday evening meeting at your corps?
If so is it a traditional meeting or something different? If not, why not?

We do not have evening services in the winters months. In the summer evening services are held in a city park. These summer services are well attended as many from other churches come because their churches have closed the evening service on a full time basis.

In the winter months the Newf. and I attend a Baptist Church were nite services are held in the winter and in the summer they join the Salvation Army in the park.

My personal opinion is that our church folks are more interested in a worldly life style than in the God they claim to service. What we need is a revival of spiritual interest and if we don't get it soon we will get the judgment of God instead.

Sadly the days of the Sunday Salvation meeting are gone at our corps too.

Only one meeting now on a Sunday morning.

I know of some Corps where they are having only one meeting but doing so about 4 or 5pm.

That seems like a good idea to me.

A big change to 25 years ago when a typical Sunday for me would be

9am Prayer meeting
10am Open air
11am Holiness meeting
2.30pm Open air
3.30pm Corps cadets
6pm Open air
6.30pm Salvation meeting.

And that was on a normal weekend.

Add to that the fact that a dozen or more weekends a year it was a 'special' weekend (Corps Anniversary, YP weekend, Corps Cadet weekend, Band weekend, Songster weekend, etc etc etc). On those occasions we had a Saturday evening meeting as well and usually a Sunday afternoon Praise meeting (in place of the afternoon open air meeting).

In the winter there was no evening open air but the other two always took place. And no cushy car rides there either.

We marched. Both ways.

Flags, band, drum, the works.

Which wasn't too bad if you happened to be one of those prima donna cornet players:D

But try it both ways, three times a day with a large bass drum strapped to your chest:eek:

Or the E flat bass.

Or carring a flag.

All of which I've done. Keeps you fit.

Yes, we do.

It used to be more of a 'forum' setting where they'd have a topic (ie. "love" for example), and then do 4 weeks discussing that from a Christian perspective. It was very interactive - with a supper, questions asked from the congregation, and it more in a 'lecture' style of setting - very casual and laid back. We'd often have clips from popular films, as well as a vocal performance of a popular song as well.

Now, it's the same format as Sunday morning's (9:30) service.

Haha, when i was going to the SA in the early 70's i was 'trying' to learn the cornet in Band practice - emphasis on 'trying' :D My teacher was in the Band and a marvellous teacher, let's just say i wasn't a very good learner! :D

I was busy at least 5 nights out of the week in some activity at the Corps -

Mon - Band practice
Tues - Scouts
Wed - Corp Cadets
Fri - Songsters meetings
Sun morn - SS + holiness meetings
Sun nite - Evening Salvation meeting. In the summer it would be open air meetings most weeks.

Ah, those were the days!
