Summer Thunder

Lakota beauty, Texas Ranger, fiery and independent. Transported to a world she never knew existed.

Physical Description:
Race: human, ¼ Lakota Souix, ¾ White, Gender: Female, Age: 28, Ht: 5’9”, Wt: 157, Hair: Jet Black, Eyes: Sky Blue, Skin: Olive tone

Summer is tall and has an athletic build which is owed to good genetics and hard work on a horse ranch while growing up. Her sleek black hair falls to her waist and her sky blue eyes shine with wit and intelligence. Summer looks a lot like her Lakota warrior father, but her eye color is from her mother.

She wears clothing odd to those she’ll meet in Christia, a strange, long-sleeved tunic with round fasteners down the front. Over that she has an odd, brown leather jerkin which has no sleeves. On the little jerkin, over her heart, the woman wears a cloak clasp, but she has no cloak! The cloak clasp is shaped as a circle with a star in its middle. There are words etched in the top and bottom of the circle, “TEXAS RANGER” Her pantaloons, or trousers, are of a material no one has ever seen. Her hat is wide brimmed, but is shaped strangely. The woman’s boots are buckskin, but have fringes at the top and unusual beadwork around the ankles. Most strange of all is a wide belt slung low on her hips which appears to hold many metal bits that look like some sort of sling ammunition. On the side of the belt is a large pocket which is totally useless. The pocket has a hole in the bottom and no flap! The bottom of the pocket is tied to the woman’s thigh for some unknown reason. Yes, this woman’s clothing is strange indeed!

Personality:
Summer is confident and outgoing, has a keen intellect and a great sense of humor. She smiles much of the time, but there is a pain behind her blue eyes that comes out occasionally. At these times the usually gregarious woman will grow quiet and may withdraw. Summer has a stubborn streak a half mile wide, but she will say she’s determined. Her independent and fiery spirit has served her well in overcoming tragedy. It also helped her in her quest to earn a place and serve with the Texas Rangers.

Growing up with a large, extended family has made Summer friendly and accepting of all sorts of people, but the ones she’ll meet in Christia are like none she’s ever met! Loving and compassionate, Summer has always been happy to help those in need, and she can be rather harsh on those who victimize the needy. While she is friendly, Summer does not get close to many outside her family. However, when she does let someone into her heart she is fiercely loyal.

Background:
Born in Longtree, Wyoming in 1860, Summer Thunder is the only daughter of a Lakota Sioux warrior and a duchess who fled England. The duchess met the warrior as she sought to escape an arranged marriage, he saved her life, the two fell in love and married. The Thunders built a horse breeding/training ranch they called Thunder Valley and the twosome raised their family there. Summer has four brothers, two older and two younger. They are all very proud of their Native American heritage. The children grew up learning about their Lakota roots, but they also had the best education possible which came in the form of tutor Henry Erpelding.

Summer also learned many things about being a lady from her cultured, yet tough, mother. Being only half Sioux, Colt Thunder, Summer’s father, knows the harsh reality of prejudice and discrimination. He used his ranch to help several men and women who might otherwise have found themselves exploited and mistreated by other employers. Colt hired people from various ethnic backgrounds and because of this the children were exposed to many different cultures. Summer found she could easily learn their different languages. Before she left for college she knew nine, but most often she used English, Lakota and French.

At college Summer majored in European History and Languages. She had no idea what she’d do with that sort of education, but after meeting James Wedgewood she didn’t care. Jamie, Summer was the only one allowed to call him that, was the love of her life. They intended to marry, but Jamie was tragically killed in a stagecoach robbery. Summer was inconsolable. She threw herself into her schoolwork, finishing her degree a year early. When she returned home her family urged her to move on, but she just could not find a way to get over Jamie’s death. Finally, after nearly a year of pushing and pitying looks, Summer fled Thunder Valley. She traveled for a couple years, going home only occasionally. In Europe she learned German, but traveling the world and meeting new people did not ease the ache in her heart. Summer went back to the U.S., but did not return to Wyoming.

Summer decided she wanted to be of service, but in everything she tried she was a miserable failure. She was too impatient with unruly students to be a good teacher. She did not have the heart to be a nurse, seeing so much pain and death was too reminiscent of Jamie. There wasn’t much else for a woman to do, but that didn’t stop Summer. Somehow she earned a place on the roster of the Texas Rangers and she took to it like a fish to swimming. After more than five years with the Rangers Summer found herself in need of a break. She’d seen too much and felt she’d helped too little. Her captain agreed to give her a year’s sabbatical if she’d apprehend a fugitive on the run to Ohio. Having finally captured her man, Summer is at long last going home, or so she thinks…

1) A closeup, notice the scar?

2) A happy moment. Summer had just won a quickdraw target shooting contest at a big barbeque held each year by the Texas Rangers.
