Hi Tears,

I rececntly had a friend of mine die, only find out that her husband (another good friend) had killed her. When the investigators came to his house to search he left and commited suicide. I stuggled with this so much, my tears could not be stopped. My husband e-mailed our pastor and asked him some questions for me. One of which is the same you have just asked. He said while suicide is a sin we have no idea what the person is thinking at the time. We do not know if they are reaching out to God in their final moments. We also don't know and will never know what Gods decision will be. There are only a couple suicides in the Bible (I think two), both under extreme circumstances. I think the answer my dear pastor gave me is that it really depends on the situation and the frame of mind. I hope that this has helped answer your question, I know it is a tough one to understand fully. God Bless

Do you believe you can lose your salvation? I don't. Suicide is a sin because it hurts the body which is the temple of God. If somone commits suicide that totally take God out of the picture.

Romans 10 (NIV)
9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

1 Corinthians 6:19
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

Why would a Christian commit suicide? Jesus came that we might have life, and have to the full. John 10.10

I suppose it would be because of suffering and depression, depressed people are not in a rational state of mind, but see everything as extremel negative, they are pessimistic. Both counseling and medication together provide the best treatment, tand treatment centers can be found in the phone book.

Suffering allows us to grow, suffering is good; God uses it to make us better than what we are, without suffering, we would have no reason to change.

Ecclesiastes 3

The only thing I can really add here is something a friend had said to me once. It would be rather difficult to ask for forgiveness for suicide. It would be murder, wouldn't it? I don't know.

As someone else said above, nobody knows how God will judge that act. I would play it safe and NOT do it. That's just me. (I woulda looked out for the water main :D )

If you are truly saved, committing suidcide will not take away your place as a child of God. There's no stipulation in the Bible that says "All sins can be forgiven, except for suicide, that's a one-way ticket to Hell".

Although I find it hard to concieve of someone committing suicide once they have been saved. I'm sure it's happened, and I've considered it myself. Sorry if I haven't been helpful at all.:(

i tried to commit suicide, about 3 times, was on meds for almost 2 years. That was before i knew Christ. Since i've known him, i've never thought about doing it again and am blessed daily just to be living. I nearly bring myself to tear thinking about it, and how i was so close, but then thank God for who he is. Christ is all the love you need, no one elses, theres no reason to commit suicide. I've also often wondered what if you commit suicide because you hate the filth of the earth and want to be with jesus? One, it's not your body, God "owns" it, your body is a temple for Him. Why demolish His temple?

I find it interesting that the Bible never condemns suicide specifically, especially as it was a popular way to go in the Roman world (it was considered honerable if you were a burden to the society) and they had such a great chance to address it when Judas killed himself. In the old testament, suicide was usually viewed as a positive thing, but for specific reasons. Samson wanted one last chance to get back at his captors, Saul killed himself so he didn't have to face defeat, Achitopel killed himself after failing to overthrow David (and was granted an honerable burial) etc... in the entire Bible, I believe there are six (only one in the New Testament) and none are labeled specifically as a sin.

As for MY view, I see it as a great tragedy. I've told suicidal friends before that you cannot be sure - even yourself. If you feel so hopeless that God can't give you a reason to live, what will you say when you look Him in the face and have to explain yourself. Will you apologise, or will you run to hell to avoid the confrontation.

When God looks up from his desk, a bit surprised, and says, "what are YOU doing here?" What could you possibly say?

The great mystery is simply because the Bible never discusses it, but there is little doubt that God has a serious plan for you and it doesn't include death by your own hand. I hate to give another evasive answer, but there's just not a clear one.
