Yes, I believe that killing oneself breaks the commandment about murder. However, we still shouldn't judge a person's spiritual condition because that person could have repented before actually dying.

Indeed, i agree. I had an uncle who commited suicide just recently due to depression. I was told by my other family members that when he shot himself on the head, he didn't die until 3 hours later. Who knows if Jesus was reaching to him during that time

In the teen forum, an interesting topic has come up- is suicide a sin? What are your thoughts on the matter?

The Bible informs us that whatsoever is not of faith is sin. Rom. 14:23

With that said, what is suicide but an act that is brought upon by lack of faith and trust in God? Hence it is not of faith, and must therefore be sin.

You see, we ought to cast our cares on Christ, believing that He cares for us. It is not for us to take such matters into our own hands, but to trust that God will supply all of our needs (Phil. 4:19).

Some would soon give up on God because life isn't so friendly at times. Yet, God never promised us an easy life. Nevertheless, He did say that He would be with us always, even unto the end of the world. What more could we ask for than to walk through life with the most powerful being in all the universe by our side? What do we have to fear while knowing that His presence is there with us in a very personal way?

Therefore, rather than taking our own life, we ought to give it to Jesus Christ, and thus allow Him to mold and fashion it into a vessel for holiness unto God, who intended it to be this way from eternity. In other words, there never was a time when God didn't have our best interest in mind. So why should we worry about the cares of this world while knowing that One who has overcome the world regards us with such infinite love?

There is no joy in death, but only in Christ. For, He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; and the joy of the Lord is our strength. Phil. 4:8

There are instances in which a person might not be in full control of their faculties at the time. God is able to judge. And He is not willing that any should perish, so we can trust that He will judge as one who wants to save. Yet, there are undoubtedly those who have no faith, and therefore stand condemned already as the Scriptures declare.

It was never declared as sin in the bible but Saint Augustine of Hippo declared it as sin.

This was partly to do with the times.
It suddenly became "fashionable" to commit suicide. I guess things were really really bad back then.

I suppose, the terrible thing about calling suicide a sin, is that suicide (unlike most sins) is finite.

After suicide comes death.
After death, there is no repentance (though I may be wrong, to my knowledge, this hasn't been revealed to us).

If that is so, it would make suicide an unforgivable sin, and all sins are forgivable, apart from "Mar 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: "

Some of the Orthodox people that I was discussing this with in another thread said pretty much what I said, that we can't really say for sure if a person who commits suicide has committed an unpardonable sin because we don't know if they might have repented in the last few moments before death. There is always the hope of that as long as there is life.

I think that is for God to decide don't you? After all where does it say it is a sin in the Bible? Murdering your brother is not about killing yourself.

Its in my nature to question stuff like this. Besides...

[bible]1 Peter 3:15[/bible]

I feel I should be ready to give an answer to those who ask me. Simply coping out and saying "I'll leave that to God decide" seems pointless, when I can find out through the bible what God thinks :)
