• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So in the past few months, my parents started noticing my deep depression. In result of this, my Mom sat me down and told me about her family history. She said that she is most always depressed, and that every person that she knows of in her family has suffered from deep depression. I have a feeling that my Dad's family has probably suffered with depression as well. I felt like saying, this explains alot.

Well, finding out that there were depressed people in my family was not really shocking, but the amount of suicide was. You see, I never got to meet either of my grandpas, from both my mom and dads side of the family. I think that my dad's grandpa committed suicide, and my mom told me that her father tried to commit suicide by lighting his house on fire. Although he survived, he died in the hospital old, burned and depressed. I feel sick because my family history is telling me what an uphill battle depression is going to be. :(

 you can fight this! I once heard a preacher say that "you can stop generational sins, but it isn't going to be easy", it probably wont be easy. I have fallen prey to my families generational sin (eating disorders) and I pray that if I have a dayughter that she wont fall prey to it and that she will have the strength to stay away.

One thing I've noticed is that when you surround yourself with the people that have the generational sin and wont admit that they are sinning, it is easier for a person to fall into it. When I am at school I dont really think about my eating disorder to much (I am recovered for the most part), but when I go home I really have to be on my guard because my mother is still deep into hers and doesn't see it as a problem and doesn't realize that it is hard on me.

I will be praying for you, annointed and if you ever need anything, my PM box is open.

It will be uphill, but a battle nonetheless. A battle where you will stand out in victory to the glory of God. Don't worry about your family's past. About time to start a new trend don't you think?

Victory Over Depression

Does your happiness depend on everything in your life being just right? If you think you can't be happy until all your circumstances are right, you will never be happy. We all experience times in life when we feel down for various reasons, but we can't allow our circumstances to control our emotions. Satan seeks to fill our minds with negative thoughts and emotions that cause us to feel down. He is a discourager, and he pulls us down emotionally, spiritually, financially, and in every way he can. But Jesus is our Encourager, and He came to lift us up. He came to give us righteousness, peace, and joy, and all these things cause us to feel up!

Everyone experiences times of frustration and distress over unfulfilled hopes and dreams. When things don't go according to our plans, it is normal to feel disappointment. But we must be careful how we deal with that feeling, because disappointment is the beginning stage of depression. If we remain in a state of disappointment for too long, it can turn into discouragement, despair, and finally depression. Psalm 30:5 tells us that ...Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Things may make us feel sad temporarily, but we must not stay sad. Just as we cannot afford to stay mad very long, neither can we stay sad very long. If we do, Satan takes advantage of the open door and pushes his way further into our lives, bringing more serious problems with him.

DON'T TRUST YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS

Our number-one enemy is emotions. We tend to be led by how we feel, but we must realize that feelings are fickle, they change from day to day! We should be careful not to follow every thought that comes to our mind because our thoughts and feelings don't dictate truth to us. For many years of my life, I experienced regular depression. I would awaken many mornings with a little voice in my head saying, "I feel depressed." I believed this was my own thought, not realizing that it was Satan making suggestions to me through my mind. Later, when God drew me into a closer walk with Him and I began seriously studying His Word, I learned that I didn't have to follow every feeling and thought I had. I began to speak aloud and say, "I will not be depressed." I learned to put on the garment of praise spoken of in Isaiah 61:3. We may not always feel like praising, but a victorious person does not have the luxury of living by feelings.

I've learned that staying disappointed can cause me to start feeling discouraged, which is a deeper problem than disappointment. But I've also learned that you can't be hopeful and discouraged at the same time. So as soon as the devil attacks us with disappointment and we start feeling discouraged, we need to turn to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to fill us with hope. A brief period of discouragement may not have a devastating effect, but long-term discouragement can lead to depression—a very serious problem.

RESIST THE DEVIL AND REJOICE IN THE LORD!

Depression is defined in part as "a hollow; being in a low state; a state of sadness; dejection." The real cause of depression is not where we are, but our attitude about where we find ourselves. It is possible to learn to live on the other side of your feelings. We will always have feelings, they will never go away, but we can make our feelings line up with our decisions. That's why God gives us the fruit of self-control. James 4:7 tells us to resist the devil, and we must also resist depression and anything that resembles it because it is of the devil. Philippians 4:4 says, Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice! If we stay filled with the right thing, the wrong thing has no place.

If you don't let the devil impress you with what he does, then he can't oppress you. And if he can't oppress you, then he can't depress you. So choose to be led by the Holy Spirit and you can have victory over depression. We can choose to keep a hopeful attitude by renewing our minds with the promises found in God's Word. We can claim the promises as our own and stand in faith, believing God to help us overcome our feelings and move forward into better things. We can't control all of our circumstances, but we don't have to let what happens today ruin tomorrow. We can actually turn things around by making a decision to let go of the situations that caused the disappointment and discouragement and move toward the good things God has planned for our future. Many people are depressed because they can't face truth, but the Holy Spirit came to reveal truth to us. And we can't get past depression until we quit making excuses and blaming everyone else. We must face the truth and take responsibility for our actions. When we do that and ask God to help us, the spirit of heaviness leaves us and we feel light and free. Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:30: ...My burden is light and easy to be borne. Being depressed about circumstances does not change them, and is a total waste of time and a thief of joy. So we must stop letting our feelings, mind, body, and past experiences rule us and allow God to give us a fresh plan, a new idea, a new goal! You can experience victory over your emotions by being led, guided, controlled, and ruled by the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus sent to us as our Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby to remain with us forever (see John 14:16). Thank God, we don't have to be disappointed, discouraged, despondent, depressed, or in despair. Jesus not only is the Way, but He is also the way out! Jesus is our healer, our glory, and the lifter of our heads.

When your head is down, lil Sis.. what do you see? De Feet.. (defeat)

But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

Sometimes our hands do hang down, because of everyday life, or depression, what ever the case may be,, but thanks be to God we can bring our burdens to others and all to the Lord. It is our responsibility as brothers and sisters in Christ to "lift each others hands" just as Aaron and Hur lifted Moses tired hands. Jesus is the lifter of our heads when we are overcome with sorrow and depression.. wow,, what a blessing!

Depression is a terrible thing,, it makes us miserable and others around us.. Jesus said the joy of the Lord is our strength..

I know exactly where you're coming from.. I have the same in my family tree, it sure has been a battle,, I'm one that searches for answers. I did go to a dr and he prescribed some meds for me to help me,, I thought it was terrible PMS,, but at any rate this struggle has introduced me to this forum and I have been SO encouraged and drawn closer to the Lord than I have for years.. Hang in there sis,, and God will heal you through his word and bro's and sis' loving prayers..

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; (dis eases)

God bless you lil sis,, I will remember you in prayer,, and you me, Love in the Lord, Faye

There is a lot of truth in this post about trusting emotions and feelings. However, it's equally dangerous to deny them too. Believe me, I know from experience.

Why is it that you believe in suicide? The word suicide brings shivers to all. Its the end of a life. Its a testimony to hoplessness. Its a powerful tool used by Satan to defeat us. I know. I've been there many times.

The word suicide is just that -- a word. The Word is God. Which is more powerful? Suicide is a name describing the final act of ultimate hopelessness in one's life. Jesus was given the name above all names. He is Lord over all names -- including but not limited to bipolar, depression, cancer and death! Which name will you believe in?

If then, Jesus is Lord over all names, why are we afraid of the name suicide? Shouldn't we be more afraid of the name that rules over every other?

I have been praying for you. I know that you will be healed -- IF you believe.

PM me if you doubt this.

I am sorry to hear about your family history. How I think of it though, is this is your chance to change history!!! Keep striving on, trusting in God and not giving up. You have people going through the same thing and we pray for each other. You will be okay if you just hang on! I will pray for you. Best Wishes. Lily00:angel:
