On Sunday evening, Preston Werner, a sophmore at my high school, met with 5 other students to work on an english project which consisted of filming a scene from MacBeth. He had to leave early because his aunt and cousin were coming over for dinner. After eating he excused himself from the table and went downstairs to his bedroom. Awhile later, his family heard a gunshot and rushed down the stairs to find that their only child had attempted to kill himself.
He was taken to the hospital and a team of doctors fought for his life all evening. They said he probably would not survive, and if he did he would be severly brain damaged for life. The next morning an email was sent to all the teachers from the counciler countaining the previous information. Teachers were told to inform their first class of the day. When it was read aloud, many students struggled to place a name to a face, and a yearbook was brought out. I didn't have any trouble, since he was in the same grade as me and we had been aquaintances since elementary school. The rest of the day passed in a shock, as wispered conversations and gossip reached an all-time high. As each of my classmates walked into our third class, which now had a permanently empty chair, each face asked the same question, "Will the teacher say anything or simply pretend it didn't happen?" We didn't have to wait long, and as our teacher walked in with a grim expression, her first words were "I've been dreading this block all day." She then lost her fight for control of her emotions and had to leave the room with a strangled "sorry." Riding the bus home was no treat either, since he usually sat across the aisle from me and the bus driver still stopped in front of his desolate-looking house.
A group of ladies from our church visited him in the hospital. They reported that Preston was unconcious, and they were basically waiting until they had organ recievers before pulling the plug. He died Monday night.
I think it's fairly obvious his school and family need prayer. His entire family was athiest so his funeral will be held at the mortuary instead of a church. It's been a very tramatic time for our entire school but I can't even imagine what his family is going through. We still have to watch the film of the scene from MacBeth that was filmed the night he shot himself, which will be a hard time for our entire class. I didn't think someone my age would do this, but I was wrong.....
sorry this was so long, I have a lot to say.
