  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

HI all!

I'm interested in starting a small group studying the OT.

Do any of you have any suggestions on how the best way to go about it is?

Should I start in the beginning and just work our way through the OT?

Is there any OT books that you feel should be studied ASAP?

As a woman, do you think it would be a good idea to make it women only? (only I'm afraid i won't get any interest....women typically aren't as interested in that sort of stuff, I've found, present company excluded of course! :) )

Any good reformed study guides(I'd like to stay away from typical fill-in-the-blank study guides, if possible)

Basically, this would be a small group that met once a week, maybe once every 2 weeks and studied the OT. I think too many good christians(me included) are missing out on some good stuff in the OT because it's not focused on as much as the NT. It's not that it's not used, just not as well studied as the NT.

I've been wanting to start studying the OT for a while now, and think that maybe if I started a small home group, it would help hold me accountable, plus we'd all get imput from others.

Advice would be MOST welcome!!! thanks!

I agree the OT isn't referrenced studied avidly enough in our churches. I'm not sure about having the study for women only, as I think many men would be quite interested in the study as well. I do not know of any specific order in which to study the books, though I see no problem in just working from Genesis through to Malachi. Perhaps someone else can recommend a better method.

Currently, I am in a study of Genesis and have been loving it! It is giving me a clearer picture of all the people, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as well as others, and what their story is, and how each related to God and other people.

Of course, I would highly recommend Genesis.

May I highly recommend the book of Exodus? I believe that that book covers everything. God's love, God's justice, God's holiness, God's beauty. Etc etc. If you haven't noticed, I tend to quote Exodus a lot, so I'm sort of biased. But, if you want to focus on one book, Exodus is my recommendation.

Hope all goes well with the study.

To the glory of God,

Randy

I have used the Life Change Series by NavPress, and if I remember correctly all of the questions require at least a sentence to answer. The following address will get you to their website for a look at the books in the series. They are also reasonably priced at about $7 at Christian book stores so it is easy for everyone to have their own.

If your thinking of having the study in the evening include the husbands and have coffee afterwards for continued discussion and visiting. In Virginia we always had a social period after the worship hour which helped us all feel more like a family, because many of us travelled and seldom saw each other during the week. It made all the difference between just attending and being part of the congregation.

Hi Imblessed
I think starting at Genesis and working through one book at a time in order is a good idea , especially if you make notes when studying.

Maybe a stratedgy that would pay off is doing a preliminary study , maybe an hour on the overall view of the Old Testament .......... http://www.carm.org/bible/bib_ot_books.htm

my personal favourites are Genesis , Job , Jonah Hosea and Leviticus.

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions. Keep em coming

Elderone, I'll check out that website....
I'm definate going to try to get couples, I think, because my husband will most likely be joining in the study.....

I still haven't settled on a day though...I need to talk to my husband first.
