  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They look like pretty cool stuff but I have no idea which to buy. Any pointers? I do love sci fi genre!
Any of the Gundam series you would probably enjoy. I liked the movies Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell . One warning I want to give you about anime though be carefule when switching from TV shows to DVD and Manga because of editing rescripting the shows shown on the networks aren't always the same as the orginal anime.

My general all-purpose suggestions:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Macross/Robotech
RahXephon
Ah! My Goddess
Galaxy Angel
Azumanga Daioh
Elfen Lied (not for the squeemish, but a very good series; incredibly tragic)

and practically anything from Masamune Shirow, which would be Ghost In The Shell and Dominion Tank Police primarily

Not all of those are sci-fi, but they might have sci-fi or fantasy elements to them.

what is Elfen Lied about?

From Anime news network.com

Age rating: Mature (contain bad language, nudity, and extreme graphic violence)

Genres: Drama, Horror, Psychological, Romance, Science Fiction, Shounen

Plot Summary: The Diclonius, a mutated homo sapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possesses two horns in their heads, and has a "sixth sense" which gives it telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murder most of the guards in the laboratory, only to get shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives and manages to drift along to a beach, where two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka discovers her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta's home. However, it appears that the evil "Lucy" is not dead just yet...

I haven't seen the whole thing yet, (only about half of it) but I'm finding Aura Battler Dunbine to be a great series which is pretty accessible. The volumes were originally pretty expensive, but you should be able to find them used for cheaper. It's not exactly sci-fi, but there are giant robots and "atmospheric battleships" if you will.

It starts off looking like a pretty straightforward series, but then it quickly starts to surprise you by developing in ways which another anime probably wouldn't have. The plot truly gets epic, and it doesn't take it that long to get that point (things get pretty intense by the tenth episode or so).

That about sums up the basic plot, but it's a lot deeper than that, getting into these events that happened to Lucy and Kouta when they were kids, and some psychological or otherwise heavy material - split personalities, repressed memories, sexual abuse, etc.

Unfortunately, the anime only covers about half of the manga I think, and some things aren't explained as well in the anime, but that's not too big of a deal. The nudity and gore content in the show is a lot more spaced out than some AMVs show. It's a weird mixture of horror, psychological thriller, and tragic romance (if the romance part is only implied).

I just might have to check out that manga then
The manga isn't licensed, but it is being scanlated, if that helps any. The anime was licensed by ADV and it's already been completely released Stateside.

This is the actual page on ANN for the series, which you can see an example of the anime artwork.

Best one is Nausicaa of the valley of the wind by miyasaki..
Battle angel alita has an awesome storyline... but gets very graphical (gore) in some cases... the artwork and detail is some of the best out there.

Kenshin is a very good one about repenting.

I realize that I should probably mention that Dunbine has an excessively high death count, which isn't immediately appararent at the beginning of the series. So if you do not like to have a good deal of tragic death in a series (especially at the end), it'd probably be a good idea to avoid it (and pretty much everything by Tomino except Raideen, Daitarn 3, L-Gaim, Turn-A Gundam and Overman King Gainer, actually.)
