  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am looking for a book that really challenges the way we live as Christians. I do not want to question beliefs, but how we play out our roll in God's plan. Shake up our complacency, challenge the way that we do things. I am teaching our class next session, and I'm leaning towards calling it 'Rethink Everything'.
I have looked into David Platts book, "Radical", but I want to go beyond living the 'American Dream'. I want to evaluate whether or not we our actually fooling ourselves into believing our own...I guess...'Christian Dream'. Where we believe in our actions, more than our God. I wish you could hear the sincerity in this post, because I am not wanting to doubt our God, just our habits-our practices. I have been writing a lot of my own lessons, but found that I would really like some solid reference, and some guidance from anyone that hears this.
Thank you so much...

A Chance to Die by Amy Carmichael

A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 - Keller

written by a modern day shepherd and goes into depth explaining what the things in the psalm are in relation to the life of sheep (such as annointing the head with oil)

Hudson Taylor and Maria

The first and third books are about missionaries and I've found that reading about them can be very challenging to our American Christian viewpoint.

Have you read "The Cost of Discipleship" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer? That's an excellent and challenging read - I'd highly reccomend it

That is the first thing that came to mind for me. If one wants more I'd also reccoment Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Eberhard Bethge (sp). Some of the details of his life are rather inspiring for anyone who can see the subtle things.

In a completely different vein I'd reccoment "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis. Some strugle with this one as it is told from Satan's viewpoint. So it is not for everyone. It has some definite advantages for a study group as each chapter is pretty much stand alone. It also deals with more ordinary temptations to fall short, not huge thigns, little things. For me it was a light read, but then I'm a bit of a math geek. (Important side note. This book has been translated into American. Avoid that translation,. it butchers many points. If there are no German Soldiers, if there is Liver and Onions instead of tripe and msot importnat if there is Liberal and Conservative Christianity instead of the High and Low Church you have the American translation. Either throw it out or keep it and contrast it to the original, perhaps with a view that Screwtape himself was involved in the translation).

Manly Dominion or Womanly Dominion by Mark Chanski. He gives pretty good insight on how modern Christian men and women should live. These two books of his explore the extent to which our society's mores clash with the Biblical principles. I highly recommend them if you are also into learning more about gender identification and roles and marriage, even.
