  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This story tells me the extent to which God will go to help people to grow Spiritually.

Look at the story of the rich man and Lazarus: Why was this wonderful person Lazarus treated so poorly?

God Loved Lazarus and the rich man, so God provide the rich man daily with the very best opportunity to experience “Godly type Love” (Just giving a little help to Lazarus). It is truly sad for God, Lazarus, the rich man and all of us, that the rich man did not ceases this perfect opportunity to help Lazarus.

God Loves Job.

This is what Job said: Job 42: 42 Then Job replied to the Lord: 2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. 4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’5 My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. 6 Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

God can repent (be forced by man’s actions to change what He said or wanted to do) and not do anything “wrong”, but Job’s repenting is not like God’s repenting in that Job despises himself (that is not God) and repents in dust and ashes. Job repented of doing something wrong and I see what Job said to God as being wrong.

Do you think that Job went through all that suffering to teach him something?

Yes! God will do almost anything to help us grow if we are willing to accept His help, like God allowed Lazarus to severely suffer to help the rich man.

Then no lesson learned by the rich man, but Lazarus had to suffer horribly to teach it?
You are not going to be able to say (and the rich man made no excuses) that God did not help you to find out. "Love" is our first objective.

What has that to do with Lazarus suffering and the rich man learning nothing from it?

We learn from John 9:1-7 that tragedies happen not because of: Adam & Eve, bad luck, satan in the world, free will, sins or evil in the world, but because of the good which can happen. In the case of the blind man good did happen, but in the case of Lazarus good did not happen, but that was by the rich man's choice (not God's doing).
Tragedies happen like with Job, Lazarus and the blind man, but Greater good can come from them, but it is up to man, since God is only providing the opportunity. Job got to the point of being able to humbly accept God's help as pure undeserved charity and not have the slightest feeling in the back of his head (I have done nothing wrong, so God should treat me generously.).

The story of Job starts with this affirmation.
There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, and he was a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil. And there had been born to him seven sons and three daughters. And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, along with five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and also a very large family. And this man was great among all the people of the east. And his sons went and made a feast by houses, each one on his day. And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of their feasting had been completed, Job sent to them and sanctified them, and, getting up at dawn, he offered holocausts for each one. For he said, "Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts." So Job did all the days.

But on a certain day, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, Satan also arrived among them. The Lord said to him, "Where do you come from?" Answering, he said, "I have circled the land, and walked around in it." And the Lord said to him, "Have you not considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil." Answering him, Satan said, "Does Job fear God to no purpose? Have you not fortified him, as well as his house and every one of his belongings around him, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased in the land? But extend your hand a little, and touch all that he possesses, and see if he still praises you to your face." Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, only do not extend your hand against him." And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.
(Job 1:1-12)
Job's suffering was not a lesson to teach Job it was something else entirely.

Did Job learn something in the end?
Job learned in practise when he knew from the beginning, YHWH need not explain, need not reveal, and YHWH did not reveal why Job suffered.

Job repented of something and he describes himself:

"I despise myself"

Do you see Job despising himself at the beginning?

Job went from someone he himself despised to someone he could appreciate as a child of God..
