All five crew onboard the Titan submersible are dead after a "catastrophic implosion", the US Coast Guard says.

This will put the brakes on private deep water submersibles for a while. But not for long.. Within 1-2 years, I expect to see new designs, claiming to be safer and better equipped for emergencies. There are always people ready, willing, and eager to push the envelope. It’s human nature.

No, it won't. This excursion didn't use a known safe vehicle design nor did they operate by known safety protocols. They were warned by other experts who had done many excursions before. The submersible was made of carbon fiber, for instance, instead of steel. People pointed out the failure risks of carbon fiber (delamination under pressure), and neither the material nor the design had been fully tested. Heck, James Cameron at this point has spent more hours at the site of the Titanic than the captain of the Titanic did before he was killed.

Basically: They did it wrong.

The other submersible designs and safety protocols--tried and proven--will continue in use unabated.

I'm sorry they died and I'm sorry for their families. But I'm glad they didn't suffer as feared.

It seems it wasn't a matter of if the sub was going to fail, but really a matter of when. The builder and operator lied about how it was constructed and admitted he broke safety rules. Quite frankly I don't understand why people were willing to go inside of that death trap.

James Cameron also commented it was wrong to offer paying customers excursions on a submersible that had not been certified by any outside organization. I agree.

But that takes all the fun out of DIY.
