  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi Angelwind, good to see you.

That's what I like about this study. It's verse by verse thru the bible with no opinion attached to it except what each person learns, because we all have to work out our own salvation according to what the scriptures say.

verses 8-9 I beleive speak to this generation, the fruit of the lemon tree is bitter but people tie themselves to it and shout, save the tree, save the tree.

But for his honesty in question 3 John was imprisioned. Was that his chose or God's doing? And if God's doing should he have been afraid?

So many questions come up. Much more than answers I find.

But with each study and each new set of verses there's more questions and answers.

So keep checkin it out! Have a great day AW. Thanx for stoppin' in. I post once a day for sure, and I'll try to get back to all posters asp.

It was good to read thru this and look at scripture more closely...I do not get to go to a study in person.

Hi angelwind. Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, I've had kids in and out of here all day. It's great to have them here, I don't see enough of them.
Your so welcome, I love the company and the chance to chat. I don't go out for studies either and get them where I can. I have one that I do on the net that I really like and then this one.
I like the indepth ones too. And it's great to hear the comments,

:prayer: Study 9 Luke 3:23-4:13
The Genealogy of Jesus
The Temptation of Jesus

1) Notice the time of the temptation, immediately after the revelation of 3:22, and at the opening of Jesus' ministry. What light does this throw on the devil's challenge "if you are the Son of God" 4:3,9 ?

2) Consider the special subtlety of each temptation, and the means by which in each case Jesus parried the thrust. Cf. Eph 6:17. What does this teach us for our own defence against temptation?

3) What can we learn from this passage of the nature of temptation?
Note, e.g., at what times temptation may come, what sort of circumstances the tempter might use (4:2; cf. Mk 14:38) etc. How does the passage show that temptation is not sin?

The devil saw and heard the whole thing at the river...he was an unseen but real observer...yet God does not stop doing His wonders among us...Jesus is very focused on His relationship with His Father and being about His Father's business.

Jesus never really gets into an argument or even a discussion about His Sonship...He stays hidden as a Man and as God the Son...hidden in the truth and authority of God's word...using God's word wisely...spoken outloud to answer Satan...and Satan had no answers for Him.

We can probably expect the same pressure after good seasons with our God.

I am finally learning to take up the word of God as a sword...very powerful in my life...a small amount of God'w word goes a long way.

Those are excellent observances. "He stayed hidden as God,
presenting Himself as man." As man He was our example of dealing
with Satan. The helmet of salvation (it is finished) and the sword of the Spirit (His Word in us) can be our defence against the temptations, Amen.

Mark 14:38
38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

Notice that satan hits on all 3 areas of the human being

The flesh=Jesus was hungry but no food was supplied so Satan implies that man is just a fed animal and will follow him to fill that desire. But Jesus was safer, hungry , in God's provision.
The devil's idea of sonship is selfish gratification.

The intellect= a gift, on condition. Recognition of Satan's onership and the knee is bowed. Jesus didn't get His Kingdom by paying homage but by eviction.

The spirit= Satan took Jesus to the height of religion and apparent Godly trust. A direct attempt to make Jesus act on the pricipal of trust. The 1st temptation proved His relationship to God, the 2nd His position with God now Satan is daring Him to prove God's care.

Jesus defines His position to calmly, quitely abide in sure confidence.

Luke4:13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Notice how the enemy silently confessed his defeat. A remarkable proof that he's unable to gain any advantage over those who are content to abide, at whatever cost, in the will of God.

I'll post this so I now can see when there is a reply and I'm not busy to view and read.
Hi JJay, so good to see you. Take off your shoes, relax, stay awhile. I think you'll enjoy the studies 'cause it's an individual thing. I post a new one each morning so there's always something new to discuss. Plus it's slow enough that I actually get some things done in the real world...bonus..

:prayer: Study 10 Luke 4:14-30
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

1) Verses 16-21. Jesus speaks to the people of Nazareth, His own home town. What does His use of Is. 61:1-2 teach them of His mission? Why is the claim of verse 21 so startling?

2) Verses 22-30. The people were moved but not convinced (verse 22). How did Jesus interpret to them their unspoken thought (verse 23), and what did He go on to imply (verses 25-27)? What made them so angry?

In vs 25-26 I wouldn't have thought anything about Elisha going to a widow in a foriegn town except that Jesus calls attention to it. And it's not just anyplace but the kingdom of Jezebel's dad!

vs23-27 we see the hometown boy classifying Himself with the greatest of prophets plus refering God's blessings on the heathen, all of this would point to His gospel turning toward the gentiles. It seems the reason given was b/c of their hardhearted rejection of Him (thrown off a cliff no less!!!).

vs 30 Shows our Homeboy's steadiness under the threatening of His oppressors. I'm really starting to see how strong His character is. He just stays calm thru satan's attack and now the town's attempt on His life...
