1. Advocate

One name for Jesus is Advocate. The word advocate means "a professional pleader in a court of justice, one who pleads for another" (Oxford Illustrated Dictionary) This means that an advocate would appear in a court of justice to plead for someone who can plead for someone who cannot plead for themselves.

What does it mean that Jesus is an Advocate?

This means that He pleads to the Father for those who cannot plead for themselves. Jesus can do this because He is the Son of God (Mark 1 v1, Matthew 3v 17). This means that because He is the Son of God He has the authority to plead on behalf of us. This is because He is innocent and He has obeyed the Law in all points (Hebrews 4 v 15). Because He has obeyed the Law and is without sin He can intercede for us because He has no sin of His own to atone or plead for. He can also plead for us because He is the Son of Man as well (Matthew 26 v 64, John 1 v 51, John 3 v 13- 14). He lived on earth for 33 years and knew what it was to live on earth. He knew what it was to be hungry (Mark 2 v 25, Matthew 25 v 35) and He knew what it was to be thirsty (John 19 v 28, Matthew 25 v 35, Matthew 25 v 42) and tired. He also knew what it was to be tempted as we are and yet He did not sin (Hebrews 4 v 15, Hebrews 2 v 18). He knew what it was to weep also (John 11 v 35) and to be moved with compassion (John 11 v 33, Matthew 9 v 36) Because He knows what it is to like to live on earth He is able to sympathise with us who live here on earth (Hebrews 4 v 14 - 16)

What does it mean for us that Jesus is our Advocate?

This means that we have someone to plead for us in our defence. He can plead for us to the Father. We cannot plead for ourselves. Jesus can plead for us also because He has died for us on the Cross. Because as the hymn puts it "Because the sinless Saviour died, my sinful soul is counted free, for God the Just is satisfied to look on Him and pardon me." Jesus can also plead for us because He has lived here on earth and He can sympathise with us.

So in conclusion, an advocate is someone who pleads on behalf of someone else we have Jesus as our Advocate if we are Christians. This means that He can plead to the Father in our defence. He can do this because He is both Son of God and Son of Man.

Yeah ,

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
<-----> 1st John 2:1-6

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
