  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a Bible I bought that has large print because I'm getting up there in age. someone from here mentioned footnotes and I had no idea what footnotes were. My bible does not have footnotes that I'm aware. I loaded a bible onto my computer that I love because I can type in a word in the "find" section and all the verses that have that word that I typed in will come up. I was like a kid in a candy store :)
I've been paying attention to others when they talk of different translations( I love KJV) My children only want NIV because its printed to the way they talk.

I have been expressing to my husband what I would like to have and he said I want a study bible.
Does a study bible exist that has all the different translations and like I was noticing from a video I watched the other day..have all the parentheses and comas as to where they are placed from the original Hebrew and all the words that are taken out or put in or changed and the traditions from back in the days of Jesus...

Does a study bible exist that embraces all that people have found from the original and just laid it all out in one study book even thou some of it conflicts with other parts of it? I'm not sure why some completely leave out entire verses and I want to know what verses they do leave out.
I know that I have greatly appreciated learning about traditions from the days of Jesus that really helps in understanding scripture...
What is the best most understandable study bible out there?

The NKJV fulfills this want somewhat from my understanding.

Neither Greek, nor Hebrew had punctuation until modern times.

Hmmm...so if I buy a NKJV it will have all the comparisons of the other translations and tell me what verses some leave out and also does it explain traditions? I'm very confused now about parentheses...What exactly are theologians and scholars finding?

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

i trust everyone but trust no one...in other words I remain teachable but I am going to compare and weigh not only what others have found but what God has placed inside of me and hang on....learning is good and if it helps me to walk and love and feel free to run the race then all the better...

It is the closest to what you are after in English that is out at this point in time, it's footnotes will tell you the differences between underlying printed/published Greek new testaments.

As to why there are differences in textual traditions, I might actually suggest this book for you:
New Testament Textual Criticism: A Concise Guide: David Alan Black: 9780801010743: Amazon.com: Books
It also touches on what theologians and scholars are finding in regards to the text of scripture.

There are so many good ones. The John MacArthur study bible is a very concise one using the ESV translation. in the KJV, the Holman study bible and the Strand Study Bible ( a newly published study bible) seem to be very exhaustive in their notes and explanations of the greek and hebrew text, especially the Strand Study bible. As for a parallel, you'll have to do some good searching. There are some out there, usually in an NLT or NIV sort of version paralleling with a KJV. I myself use the NKJV study bible with other tools.

My only reservation, I encourage you in whatever you decide to get, is to read with an open mind and heart. Not so ready to take all the notes in the study bible as authoritative and always true. Whatever notes you may read do so with joy certainly, but with a spirit of testing it. use multiple study tools. This is especially true i believe with this new book, the Strand study bible. It's very exhaustive in it's notes and study material, but i believe it all comes from one person and his study work for some decades. Though he has many good study notes. it all comes from one man, so some critiques are that his notes at times focuses one one matter instead of the entirety of scripture and the context given.

Whatever you choose, enjoy searching, it's such a blessing the Lord has allowed the resources we are able to have now. :)

No, the NKJV doesn't compare to other translations. It's its own translation. I've never been a huge fan of study Bibles - all those footnotes are is soneone else's interpretation of scripture. But, it sounds like what you might want is a reference Bible. Check out Thompson Chain Reference Bibles. They used to be all the rage. I've always liked center column references myself, but NIV doesn't have that these days.

If you really want a study Bible then I've heard really great things about the ESV Study Bible.

Biblegateway.com is pretty awesome too because you really can compare all the translations.

I was going to suggest a New American Bible (it's catholic and has extensive notes) but I guess you already have bible overload.

TamaraLynne, if you go to the following website...

Bible Suite: Online Parallel Bible

...then you can type in any verse that you want, like Hebrews 1:1, for example, and then click where it says "Bible" and you will be brought to a page that gives you translations of the verse from several different Bible versions.

Also, if you want to read any texts as they appear in the underlying Hebrew or Greek, then here is a link to an online interlinear Bible that should be of some help to you:

Interlinear Bible: Greek, Hebrew, Transliterated, English, Strong's

Having provided these links (especially the link to other translations, many of which I personally find to be corrupted), I still recommend to you that they be supplements which you use and not your primary source of revelation. IOW, your best bet for properly understanding the scriptures is to rely upon the help of the Holy Spirit. After all, He's the One Who Inspired them and He knows exactly what they say.

May God always guide you in your endeavors.
