Students Who Made Apparent Nazi Salute in Photo Won't Be Punished
The Wisconsin students who appeared to make a Nazi salute in a widely criticized photo will not be punished, the school’s superintendent said this week in a letter to parents.

The superintendent, Lori Mueller of the Baraboo School District, said in the letter that the district was "not in a position to punish the students for their actions" because of their First Amendment rights.

I don't know if they should be punished, but we can at least see them for who they really are.

But we all know free speech has its limits...
High Schools Threaten to Punish Students Who Kneel During Anthem
The controversy over kneeling in protest of racial injustice moved beyond the world of professional sports this week, when a number of schools told students they were expected to stand during the national anthem.

On Long Island, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, which runs a private Catholic school system, said students at its three high schools could face "serious disciplinary action" if they knelt during the anthem before sporting events.

Well I'd say there is a difference. The guys were just taking a school photo and there is no evidence it was a nazi salute. The thumb is far out, the nazi salute the thumb is in a straight line with the hand. And there are many hand gestures I've seen that look like the salute but aren't. Giving them benefit of the doubt. Granted we will never know since none of them are talking about it. If they are doing the salute then they should get in trouble.

That said the football players are taking a knee during the national anthem. Which is far different from a school photo, especially since the photo normally wouldn't be seen by everyone. Which again, it doesn't make it right if it was the salute, but comparing a national anthem gesture to a photo gesture makes no sense.

However I will also say regardless of what I feel, the football players do have the right to do the kneel if they want. Troops died for their right too. I don't think they should be punished for it, but it doesn't mean they are free from being hated. Actions have consequences no matter if the action was good or bad.

A public school has realized it cannot infringe on free speech.

A private school makes no pretense of respecting free speech.

I guess somebody finds these decisions surprising. I don't but apparently somebody does. It's kind of cute, really.

I don't know if they should be punished, but we can at least see them for who they really are.

Yeah...they're teenage boys. Obviously they aren't a pack racists, they're students, they don't have any power to oppress anyone with. Even the black student did it...the parents weren't appalled, they knew what it was.

It's typical teenage rebellion.

The worst thing anyone could have done was make a big deal out of it. Now that they're in the clear....they're the cool kids.

Most generations tend to have some arbitrary and usually hypocritical/overly protective social standards that are being imposed on them by older generations. This group of boys happens to have a ton of them, they're all paper thin, and hypocritical. They were either invented whole cloth or dug up by a generation with no real battles to fight....no real causes to advance.

I'd expect to see more of this in the coming years....until 3-4 years from now it's so widespread it fails to get a reaction, or cause any outrage, or instigate a debate.

That will be the end of this sjw/political correctness nonsense.

If you read the article, you would have seen that it does not exclusively focus on a private school, hence the use of the plural of school in the title. I guess some don't read the linked articles, it's kind of cute, really.

Was it a NAZI salute?

It could have been a Bellamy salute, an Olympic salute, or a Roman salute.

That's right, they were simply stepping back in time and saluting the flag like we did back in the day! :D
Well people are always saying we need to go back to the good old days :D

“Real” Neo-Nazis would be appalled at that sloppy salute.

Well looks like the photographer said he told them to wave and he took multiple shots. So this one was just poorly timed. Looks like all those calling them nazis are feeling bad right now about assumptions.
Poorly timed in the sense that they caught them making a Nazi salute.

Poor timing? I'd call that incredible timing!

What luck that the photographer happened to get an entire class raising their arms at exactly the same time, at almost exactly the same angle, giving the unfortunate impression of all of them giving a Nazi salute.

It's almost unbelievable this wasn't planned at all ahead of time.

It doesn't actually look much like a Nazi salute to me, which is presumably why the media are saying "apparent Nazi salute."

Apparently the photographer said that he "asked the students to wave goodbye to their parents." Is there any evidence to the contrary?

Well the photographer took multiple pictures. This was the only shot that looked perfect like a wave. But someone was offended and made a big deal about it.

Lookall these "goodbye waving" pictures I found that are actually instead nazis:

And lastly heres a bonus picture of couple "waving" but they obviously are doing the "Heil hitler":

These don't look anything like the class photo from the OP. These look like normal people waving.

Ok how about these, msot of which were reported wrongly. Such as the first one which was suppose to be a "superman pose". As you can see people get offended over everything if they think it looks like something bad. I mean the swastika existed over 12,000 years ago but people still freak out when they see it because they seem to think it always means nazis:

Were these folks asked if they were making a Nazi salute or was it intended as something else entirely? Otherwise, the OP article is conflation and a clear jump to conclusion at best.

but we can at least see them for who they really are.

Okay, who are they?

Well there are conflicting reports. One guy said they did the salute. Others say they were waving, even the photographer said that. Who to believe? I don't know. In the end if they were doing the salute, I don't really care. Its tacky and tasteless but there are bigger problems in the world. Young people do stupid things.
