• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

student loans

So, I'm in a pickle. I thought for sure I was going back to school next year but the money just isn't there. I've been gone for two years already and was sure at one point that God promised me I would be back. Now I think he's changed that plan, but I'm not sure. If not, are we as Christians allowed to take out student loans? I've been given the ultimatum by my parents that I either go back to school full time or move out.

It's totally alright to get student loans, and frankly getting them is necessary for most students. Just be smart about budgeting afterwards to pay them back.

It seems like a no-brainer. If God promises you to go back to school, then take the loans and go back to school.

Unfortunately student loans are almost unavoidable if you are going to a really good school (ie anything with a better brand than a community college). But student loans are also the most toxic debt you can have right along with child support. You cant bankrupt out of them and if you default the consequences are getting more and more severe as the years go by. I would minimize how much you take out and live at home if at all possible and pay them back as soon as you get a real job ASAP.

As long as those loans are creeping in the back ground as soon as you have a job loss or some other thing happen they will be there wanting their money and they have ruthless means of getting it and can make your life hell if your are broke. Think unemployed men and child support level of hell.

Fortunately at least with student loans you can control how much you take out.

I am paying mine off in the next few months because I am making good money, but none of us know when the good money will run dry and the last thing I need is student loans calling me and suspending all my licenses, passports, etc.

If you are getting a good brand name education that will get your foot in the door for a truly good job then work study is not going to cut it, tuition is too high these days. Unless your parents live right next to campus you are going to have to commute and if you are working on top of that to pay 5% of your tution that's time you could be studying so that you don't have student loans AND no degree. That is the ultimate nightmare you want to avoid.

your starbucks manager is not responsible for your loans or your grades so make sure that you show up when you show up and that they understand school comes first. If they want to run you hard they need to pay more than 5$ an hour. If they want you to adhere to a ridged schedule ask them to cosign for your loans, that will shut them up.

Its not a good idea for anyone to be in debt, not just Christians but our society is built on debt, it will eventually fall apart like a house of cards but the people running the show are really smart and I believe they will keep it going until I am old. All of my friends thought the dollar was going to collapse like 5 years ago and it still hasn't and there is no catalyst on the horizon that will expedite it.

Thankfully tuition at the University I go to is roughly $10,000-11,000 a year depending on your program. Should I need to take out student loans at any point, I'm eligible for up to $5,500 in unsubsidized loans until I graduate, and because they're unsubsidized, I have until I finish whatever degree program I'm in to pay them off. I plan on going for a Doctorate in Music Performance after I get my Master's in Music, and possibly an MBA or some other Master's Degree alongside of it.

I don't think there are any laws against Christians taking out loans...at least not in the US.
