  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hear this term alot but haven't been able to pick up the exact meaning...

Can someone provide same?
JM: A strawman is basically redefining your opponents argument (incorrectly) so as to make it vulnerable to an easy refutation.

Yeah.

an example is the 747 from a graveyard.

The strawman is created by saying that Evolution is like a tornado in a junkyard constructing a 747. (It is not, which is why its a strawman)

They might them proceed to burn the strawman by showing the impossible odds of this event happening.

Although to those that dont know, they appear to have made a great point, but all they have really done is destroy their own false version of evolution.

Okay, can someone who doesn't speak in the 3rd person give me a definition?
JM: What's so hard to understand? An argument that is redefined incorrectly so as to make the argument easy to refute. There, I've left out the 3rd person.

An example of a strawman argument would be like Kent Hovind claiming "evolutionists think you came from rocks". He tries to justify this argument by claiming that the original Earth was rocky in which life somehow formed and then eventually evolved into people, therefore "we came from rocks".

However, this argument plants the idea in people's heads of a rock spontaneously turning into a person, which they see (outside of Genesis) as being absurd. Thus, he claims victory over evolution, even though the real theories behind these ideas are a wee bit more complicated than that.

I had a website that explains most of the logical fallacies you will encounter and how to avoid them. Apparently, I can't post it until I have 15 posts. So, until then, hello board! :)

A straw man attack is to wrongly define your oponent's position and then demolish the position you have characterized him to have. I think JM sums it up well.
