Leviticus 10:1-3

Strange fire happens when we bring it upon ourselves to do something against God’s instruction. It’s the same thing that happened in the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s command/instruction to not eat from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil: Genesis 2:17
When we disobey, life gets harder for us and yet we are not condemned because of God’s continuous Salvation. When Adam and Eve sinned the ground was cursed and so gathering food became much harder, but God began to show them the Way back to Him: Genesis 3:21, Genesis 4:4

Playing with strange fire is spiritually serious and carry grave consequences, like the example above; strange fire can also be attributed to many other things. A false christian is “strange fire” because they aren’t following what God has said in His Word, and the same goes with false teachers/prophets.

Why did Nadab and Abihu go and do this thing? It could be that they felt they were close enough to God and thought it would be ok with God. They were chosen and anointed by God, so maybe there was a notion they had that wasn’t accurate at all. Reading through the OT, God has strict instructions and failure to listen to those commands meant death. All this shown to us for our benefit for learning. God shown them how to be obedient, but our own mind and how we perceive things is not how God sees, and due to a sinful nature we fall short every time.
I’m not blaming sin because God has given us a way to overcome that through Jesus Christ. God always gives us His Way for those who seek Him. Reading through the prophets, God always lifts us up after giving special instructions and sometimes even harsh Judgments. He gives us Hope when we think there is none.

It’s better to wait and hear from God before we make any decisions on our own because God can see things we cannot. Strange fire or Holy Fire, the choice is shown throughout scripture.
