Question to all gamers:

Do you think story and game play make gamers want to finish a game with graphics being a third?

Personally, gameplay is #1 for me. I do love a good story, but what good is that if the gameplay is broken. I mean, could I really love Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3 and claim story was most important to me? ^_^

I'll always put graphics last. A pretty game is nice, and I won't discount how graphically impressive games like Bioshock, Dead Space, or Batman: AA are, but my love of all 3 of these games comes from stellar gameplay firstly, with a good story following that. That's not to say that sometimes the story does eclipse gameplay in a game, Bioshock again comes to mind here, but generally speaking, I'm gameplay all the way. That's why I still have and enjoy an NES and SNES.

Story is number one for me. I don't care too much about graphics if the story is good. I'm a big fan of older games like from the NES and SNES eras. Those graphics are not even comparable to what we have today, but many of those games are just as enjoyable today because they have strong stories or characters and rewarding gameplay. I do think gameplay mechanics are important. I want to enjoy getting through the story. But if the story does not capture my imagination and make me care for the characters, why am I playing this game with great gameplay? (Certain games, like Mario Brothers, are exempt from my Story Comes First rule because they are not really about telling a story. Those kinds of games are pure Gameplay. But even then graphics are not as important.) Also, things like worldbuilding and music are a part of the experience.

The odd thing is...not many games have memorable stories. I love what games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, and the new Batman games are doing with video game storytelling, but for every one of those games, there are hundreds of games where the story just doesn't matter. I think this is because game designers try to reward players through the things they accomplish in the game rather than through the narrative. But I want to play a game where the reward is finding out what happens next. And I want it to be an intelligent story. Gamers have grown up. Storytelling in movies and on television is as smart as its ever been. Games should be the same way. Sure there are countless stupid shows for every one brilliant one, and there are going to be plenty of games coming out with lame, tired stories. But if there are just a few really well told video game stories coming out every year, I'll be satisfied.

I guess it works best when it all comes together and you get a game that has a captivating story, great gameplay, and beautiful graphics. But the thing that is going to make me want to sit down and play is the desire to find out what happens.

I think the game Nier is proof that a strong story and good gameplay (if not stellar), can easily trump graphical prowess. If you check it out on Youtube or read reviews, you will likely see statements about it being an ugly game or a game that looks like it was from the last generation of consoles (and while I don't agree with that, I thought last gen games looked pretty good). While I would argue the gameplay (it is a hack'n slash with some magic spells added in), I never even cared about the graphics b/c the story was so amazing and is coupled with pretty strong gameplay. It is extremely well written and just absorbed me into it. It was almost like reading a great novel that you have to stay up late reading b/c you can't put it down. The story was just that good.

And props to Kolwynia (^) for picking an avatar representing one of the greatest games ever, FFVI, featuring one of the best villains ever, Kefka.

Good graphics are nice but they're not essential. Great gameplay is key to me. Most Mario games have very little story but the gameplay is always top-notch and it keeps me coming back time and time again. There are a few series, like the Uncharted games, that have great stories and solid writing that's matching perfectly with amazing graphics and environments.

For me it really boils down to engrossing and captivating gameplay. If I find it boring or repetitive then no amount of story or graphics will keep me interested.

Story and Gameplay are almost evenly tied. It depends on the game's focus which is more important. In a game like Final Fantasy Tactics, I care FAR more about the story than the gameplay. They could make the game over and over with relatively minor changes to the gamplay and I would be fine so long as the stories were interesting and fun.
In a game that focuses on the gameplay, like the new game Kingdom of Amular: Reckoning. The generic fantasy setting is easily forgiven just because of how absolutely awesome the gameplay itself is. So long as the gameplay stays brilliant a lesser story can be forgiven.

Graphics don't even come into the equation for me, appearance of the game does. So long as you don't have a series adult look to a childish and happy go luck game. The looks have to fit the context. You can't have a happy sunshine day in Silent Hill.

Pen and Paper RPG's, Text adventure games(it has been a few years, but I do occasional break these out), Board and Card Games prove that people love to play in different mediums because of the game play and yes sometimes because of story.

Even in the graphic heavy world of Computer/Console/Arcade Video Games it is the games that have better graphic design and some kind of story that keep people coming back time and again over those that just look slick but don't do anything else.

It all depends...

If the story is just plain bad, the game suffers as a whole, Killzone II for example, while the gameplay wasnt bad and the graphics even great, the story was really bad, sold the game, never played the third installment... never will...

Gears of War series IMHO had great gameplay, was very fun to me, the story was nothing special actually but it was suitable... quite unlike Killzone...

Bioshock, even though many will say this was a great game with nice graphics, atmosphere and stuff, I hated the gameplay... I liked fallout which had some similar game mechanics (hacking, exploring etc.), bioshock had IMHO weak gameplay, or in other words the battles were no fun at all to me... the story and atmosphere of the game were highly acclaimed... I just couldnt get into it...
