If a Christian has stocks, and is either having trouble finding a job or is unable to work for a time (up to two years in the particular situation I am thinking of), is it considered "okay" for them to live off of money they have made from stocks? Perhaps as long as they are being wise with their money (paying bills, buying food, 10% to the church, and with the ocassional "splurge" [no, I'm not talking a boat or anything, more along the lines of more expensive shampoo, a movie, a new razor for the DH, that sort of thing])?
I am asking because when I was born my grandparents set up some stocks for me and I now have enough in them to live at least a couple of years comfortable without blinking an eye, however our savings are dwindling as my current job situation is bleak, and my husband is a full time student. I do plan on continuing to find a job and only use that money if we have to, but I was curious if it wasn't wrong for Christians to live off of that kind of money if possible?
Thanks for your input!

I don't see how that would be wrong at all. As long as you are living wisely and not going out and buying really extravagant things then what would be the problem? You need to money for necessities and as long as your not using it to just not get a job then I don't think its a big deal.

Thank you for replying. I will have a lot of back up money even if we do use it these next couple years (we are very tight budget people now a days), and as soon as he graduates we will not have to use it (hopefully, he's going to be an electrical engineer).
This is not the case, now I am just curious to hear opinions about it, but say I decided to stop looking for work and focus on being a housewife while hubby finishes his education. Would it be wrong then to use this money to live off of? I know a man who lives off of his stocks (he even has paid for 4 bachelors degrees!) because he can't find work after a brain operation that has left him with difficulty speaking and walking, but he has stopped looking for the past 10 years and is just living off of them now. What do you think about this?

Hmm, honestly I dont know:scratch:

It seems that money should be used for emergencies and what happens if a few years down the road something major comes up and you don't have that money anymore.

What about just a part time job so you're not living fully off those stocks?

Again, the last part was mainly just inquiry, not planning on it, but I just wanted to hear opinions.
I am working part time, but my last day is Wednesday and I've been frantically applying elsewhere, but unfortunately, I'm being turned down left and right (being 19 and only working as a housekeeper prior to this doesn't help, especially since hotels are in off season and are not hiring, and the jobs that I do want are office jobs, which usually require experience [how do you get experience if they refuse to give it to you??])
I was just thinking that if in a month or two I am still without work and start pulling out of our stocks, if that was wrong. My husband is going to try to find a summer job as well. So we're still trying, I was just curious.

I am currently looking for a job as well and its sooo hard. I am pretty much in the same position, except I have been a nanny for the past couple of years. Good luck in your search!

It's your money. It's not unChristian to use it as you see fit and to help out your family (even if it's just you and your husband that is "family").

Not applying at jobs like McDonalds is just fine. You have a right to find a place that fits you and where you fit in as well.

im not talking about what a 'christian' may find exceptable, rather im on about what is financial prudent, is you 'just' being a housewife when your husband is still at school, wise? i know you dont like your job but a parttime position would give you time to find something else if thats what you wanted. jobs the world over suck bigtime, be it in an office or a fast food restaurant because its not where you want to be (if that is how you think). i know in another post i gave you the advice that the lord would provide, and no doubt he will, but what forfillment will staying at home bring you (unless of course you are expecting then thats a massively important job in itself) people need other people, even if its just wipe up after. please dont use this as an excuse to hide away from the world because you dont like work

... but you seem to have decided, Krispar, that He will provide an office Job and it simply doesn't always work that way. Think of the people in the Bible who ended up ion places they never thought they'd be and I'm sure never wanted to be... I'm sure Joseph did not want to be in prison... and Esther, good Jewish girl, never thought she'd wind up in a pagan king's harem... Daniel had no plans to be in a lion's den... Jonah did his best to avoid Ninevah... Caleb and Joshua knew they weren't supposed to be walking in the dessert for 40 years, but there they were... Hosea never planned to marry a prostitute...

If all you can find are McDonald's jobs, take a McDonald's job! Fast food work is honest work.

BTW - What part of the country are you in? What city?

Bliz I'm not an idiot, I know that he may not provide the exact job I want, but I do know that I feel God has told me I won't be working at a fast food joint, I don't think he wants me to settle for something when he has something better for me.
w00dy, God is providing, and I'm not planning on becoming a recluse any time soon. I find being a housewife and stay at home mom to be important work. I am also not wanting to work for the sake of not working, I'm just waiting for a job that is what God wants.
Thank you for your replies to everyone.

You'll have to forgive me if I'm just a little skeptical. God has had His people thrown into firery furnaces and lions dens, but He's going to spare you from the indignity? drudgery? monotony? of fast food??

You are 19 years old and so I'm assuming no training or education beyond high school. What work experience are you bringing to the table? What skills?
